Is this a good deal for a T400? Would the T61 be better?

    Hi,

I was wondering if someone could give me some advice.

This is the deal I found for a T400 - it would be $835 - do you think this is a good deal or should I hold off in hope of a better one. Basically, I am having trouble deciding!

Maybe its just me but I personally would wait. You've got a 5400 rpm disk and a 2.4 ghz chip which is an improvement over a slower chip. If you get an SSD im say go for it.

And a T61 might be better depending on who you are and what your application is. There's certainly the chance of more horse power there but less battery power.

I'd wait for a better deal, or somethings you might want to re-check are the screen resolution, for a 14.1" screen WXGA+ is better, you'll apreciate the extra space, even beter if is LED backlit.

You can add more RAM and even better quality that the system brings stock, you can upgrade to 4 gigs for cheap these days.

If you don't mind the extra weight the 9 cell battery is totally worth it in my opinion, it will give you 9+ hours of battery life.

Another thing is the DVD drive, I'd rather have a DVD burner in my laptop, but if you don't use it to burn DVD that often is something you can ditch.

I'd agree that its a good deal, but not a great one. Also agree that the wxga+ can make a big difference in viewable area. I don't think I could live with 1280 x 800 anymore, but many will never see the difference, so its personal. I bought my t61 about a year ago and when i look at prices of t400 now, it seems like they are up about 20%, even with the 10% off coupon.

I think you have a nicely configured basic machine there. I can't think of any advantages to an older t61, as long as you get the new/old t61 keyboard in the t400. Although, one of the biggest advantages of the t400 is the switchable video, which you will not get in your configuration. Other than that, the t400 is just better at power management and has the backlit screen. I really drove myself crazy when i was shopping, but looking back, it was a great decision and i spent way to much time on it.
