    It's an IBM R51 1829D4U

    It has:
    Intel Centrino 1.5GHz CPU
    15" TFT LCD
    512MB DDR RAM
    40GB HD
    CD-RW/DVD
    802.11b/g Wireless (Built in)
and a weight of around 6lbs

I can get it for $2200 Canadian, roughly $1700US

Is it a good deal? Really, I'd prefer the following, but I can settle if it's a good price.

    IBM Thinkpad
    Intel Centrino 1.6-1.7
    40gig HD
    512 megs of ram
    cd-rw/dvd
    64meg video card
    weight < 5lbs
    Good battery life.

I was thinking something along the lines of a t42. Can I get them cheap anywhere?

It seem a little pricey actually, but I guess all IBM's are since they are of such good quality. Everything is pretty standard. You can get the following for $1500:

    1.6ghz pentium m (centrino)
512mb RAM (or upgrade to 768mb RAM for $75)
    13.3" XGA crystal view screen
    40gig 5400rpm harddrive (the ibm has a 4200rpm harddrive) (you could upgrade to 60gig 7200rpm OR 80gig 5400rpm for $150)
    CDRW/DVD
    802.11b/g wireless built in
    weigh in at four pounds
    free two day shipping
(they will do the upgrades for you if you decide you want upgrades)

This is the Fujitsu S6210. Fujitsu is a top quality brand that is highly recommend by Brian the administrator of this site. If you want to buy fujitsu, you should buy from www.portableone.com

Thanks. I just feel a little iffy because although I've heard of fujitsu, I've never seen any of there laptops in stores near me. How durable are they? Can they withstand the beating that an IBM can?

That I dont know. I have never used a thinkpad, but Im sure others (maybe Brian the admin) can answer your fujitsu vs ibm durability question.

Also, I was looking at the portableone.com specs for the s6210, and the S6220, but they seem exactly the same. Why is the S6220 better? Finally, is it worth the extra money? 1700 seems like a good price for the s6210

edit: what kind of video card does the s6210 have? I want to play some games.

Unfortunately, it looks like getting a fujitsu may be a problem. PortableOne.com won't ship internationally using international credit cards (I'm canadian). I guess the t42 is the new option. I can't really get a student discount like the americans, so I'm looking for a good deal again :)

The 6220 is more expensive becuase it has the dothan version of the pentium m and the 6210 has the banias version. The dothan version has a 2mb L2 cache and the banias version has a 1mb L2 cache.

    1.7 banias = 2.72 pentium 4
    1.7 dothan = 2.99 pentium 4

I would say the dothan processor is not worth the money. If you still want to spend the money, you could get more RAM and/or a faster/bigger harddrive.

Vasant56, I am also checking a new R51 and the price you got is about normal in the US, because it has the 15" widescreen (perhaps SXGA) and 512MB of memory. For comparison, IBM sells the cheapest 14.1" XGA with 256MB and 30GB for about $1,500 online in the USA (+ shipping and tax). Newegg.com sells the same for about $1,500 but with free shipping and no tax except in a few states. A T42 will be much more expensive.
