I think you could do better for a price. To get the educational models/prices the school has to have some kind of purchasing agreement with IBM, you can't just say I'm a student or teacher.
The best way to save money on the IBM thinkpads in my opinion is to get the models with the 1 year warranty instead of the 3 year as they will be at least $200 cheaper. I've bought my thinkpads from 1st one was www.newegg.com and the T42 I got came from www.mwave.com. You can save quite a bit from these places, but they don't have a no questions asked 30 return like IBM does. I took my chances and both times the notebooks were perfect.

You can get it for $47 less at IBM's Mastercard discount site.

If you buy it from an out-of-state reseller, though, you could save more than $100 on sales taxes.
Also, if you'd consider a Hewlitt-Packard, HP has an education discount for most public school employees. The prices aren't tied to district contracts, i.e. you can buy one for personal use at home. HP may call your school to verify that you're an employee. I'm not sure how IBM's program works.
Is this a good deal on a T42
