All right, I just found out that I had been missing a link on our university store which gave more laptop options. Here is what I'm getting for z61m (including tax):
    Price: $1880
    Lenovo - IBM ThinkPad Z61m - 15.4-inch - 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo
Intel Core Duo 2.0 GHz (T2500), 512MB RAM, 80GB HD, 15.4" WSXGA+ display, DVD +/- RW, Fingerprint Reader, Gigabit Ethernet, 11a/b/g Wi-Fi, XP Pro, 3Yr-Depot Warranty.

I will have to spend 200$ more to upgrade it to 2GB ram - torn between this and the asus z96j, but now am leaning towards this motivated by Zaz'z review.

    Its the same as:

Also, they have the option of Aluminum Top or Black top. Which one is more rugged/durable ?

No, this thread is more for comparison just between thinkpads, other thread is for comparison betwen asus and thinkpad.

Is the aluminium top different material or is it just a matter of paint ?

    Cheap aluminium. Basically tin made.

its actually a Aluminium Titanium alloy and doesn't feel cheap at all. Tin is a seperate element used primarily to coat other metals to prevent oxidation or in other alloys (like bronze). Tin is not generally used as a structural component.

    /just sayin'

If you are looking for a well built gaming business class notebook, perhaps the HP nc8430 with the x1600 might fit.

yes, on the z61m the "black" is polycarbonate/ABS plastic the "silver" is Ti/Al alloy and ABS.

And before someone corrects me: the Z61m and Z61t use different case materials. The Z61t uses carbon reinforced polymer and not ABS.
