On my own at a later point I would upgrade the ram to 8 gigs for a cheaper price.
The cost is $1003 since I am a student. Would you consider this a great price for this machine? Would it be in my interest to get purchase a better than standard warranty?
The same configuration with no discounts without the student price is $1239 for comparison.

Not really.. I got an i7, 4GB (irrelevant.. later upgraded to 8), 9-cell, IPS, BT, etc for $960 + tax, and found it for $800 a few weeks later during a doorbusters. Considering the laptop is getting more and more outdated with time, I would hold off until you can get that below $800.
EDIT: It just occured to me that you didn't list what laptop.. clearly the optimus graphics means its not an x220, which negates what I said entirely.. -
This is a T420.
I am torn between this and an Envy. I assume if I get a good coupon I can get a quality Envy 14 around 1150. But it would be a much better GPU, and USB 3.0.
While they are very different laptops, for different reason I could be happy with both. If HP was not annoying and only offering the low resolution option my choice would have been easy.
Not having a poor consumer line build quality is main concern. Then I am trying to find the right balance between power and price.
I can't seem to find a laptop that hits the sweet spot right now. -

ThiPaX40, from what website did you get that laptop, and and what price?
-
- Dell Latitude E5420 / E6420
- Sony Vaio CA
- Toshiba Tecra R840
- HP Elitebook 8460p/8460w, but I usually don't even bring them up because HP price-gouges you by making the cheapest pre-config with 1600x900 $1500, and by making the cheapest configurable model start at $1800. -

Judging the fact you wanted a better graphics card, I assume you either plan to do light gaming or photoshop work on the laptop you are after. If that is true, then I would suggest either forego the NVS graphics card (as I believe there is not a significant increase in performance over the integrated one or get the Envy (the graphics card will not be able to play most games in any higher resolutions above medium to high detail from what I can remember). However, if this is not true (as in you do not plan to game or any other graphics intensive work) then I would suggest the X series or the T series without the graphics card.
It would also really help us more if you tell us your needs.
Is this a good price / advice?
