I want to purchase an X220 to replace my really old and slow Lenovo 3000 N500 and totally missed out on the deals last week. I'm not sure whether I should wait for one of those 15% - 30% coupons to appear again. School starts for me in about a week, although I don't mind holding off the laptop purchase till September.

The configured specs I want are:

    Intel Core i5-2410M Processor (2.3GHz, 3MB L3, 1333MHz FSB)1
    ThinkPad PC DOS License12
12.5" Premium HD (1366x768) LED Backlit Display, Mobile Broadband Ready, 2x2 Antenna
    Intel® HD Graphics 3000
    2 GB DDR3 - 1333MHz (1 DIMM)8
    No Fingerprint Reader
320 GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm4
    ThinkPad Battery 29++ (9 cell)60
    No Bluetooth
    Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 (2x2 AGN)10
    Integrated Mobile Broadband - Upgradable65
    4286 : 1 Year Depot Warranty - TopSeller7
    720p Camera

    Original price: $1,461.00
    Sale price: $879.75
    S/H: $10
    Tax: $55.61
    Total price: $945.36

Note that this is without an operating system. I've been looking all over and can't find any coupon to stack at this moment :(

Maybe there will be a coupon on July 4?

    does the code LOGICBUY10 work?

Also do you intend to upgrade the RAM yourself to 4GB?

Yes I intend to upgrade to 4GB or 8GB myself by buying through Newegg. Are there specific laptop memory models I need to buy, or do they all work?
And no LOGICBUY10 doesn't work for me.

If I were you I'd wait. It's not an unreasonable price, but you're in a rare window period where no coupons are available. Please also note that Lenovo Outlet is selling X201s dirt cheap (600-700 dollars) and they are a good option too (maybe I'm biased, I prefer 16:10 more :p)

Seeing as the X220 is occasionally offered for $600-700 brand new (with an i3 or i5 CPU) with W7 installed, I'd say those X201 laptops are overpriced--the X220 offers a much better IPS display, SB processors, etc.

I bet so. I have been tracking coupons for the last month (just bought a x220i) and there were only a few (2-3) days that did not have applicable coupons. They usually come up with stuff like 'memorial day sale', or 'doorbuster sale'

    Also, check out student and shareholder discounts. Also see this x220i i3-2310M, 2GB DDR3, 250 GB 5400 rpm, 4cell, DOS-OS ($554.62) - Slickdeals.net
and the mastercard deal works ;)

I got my X220i with IPS screen + lan card upgrade (with windows 7) at $700, sans tax.

I'd wait, I got a quote few weeks ago for i7, win7, 9 cell, bluetooth, 320 7200rpm, fingerprint, 4gig ram single stick, IPS etc for same price of $945 after tax.

Logicbuy codes don't work on lenovo's laptops that run PC DOS. Gotta configure it through with having windows.

I was able to get the SAME SPEC LAPTOP (but with the i5-2520 and windows home premium 64) for $970 after taxes and free shipping. (920 for just the laptop). This was using a special 72hour code that saved around $50 more than the logicbuy code. (think it was 15% instead of 10%)

So... no. i don't think this is a good deal. Configure the same thing with windows and use the logicbuy code... should cost around the same.

Funny you mention that as some x200s are still sold for 400-600 dollars, though x200s and x201s offer 1440x900, and for some people vertical real estate is more important than processing power.

Thanks, and I would also point out that X201 has a palm rest and non-integrated touchpad buttons which are considered superior to the X220. As for processing power, there is not much of a difference actually.

I am kind of itching to purchase the X220. If they have a lower price within 30 days after purchase is it possible to ask them to refund the difference?

Actually I'm talking to a sales rep right now and she's saying it's only for changes in the base price, and can't use any newly-issued coupons. ARRRGH

Make a quote. It's good for 30 days. In in fact did this when I bought my X220i and got it price matched.

+1 for waiting untill the next decent sale unless you really need it soon. For the same specs but with 7 home premium, you should be able to easily get it for up to $200 cheaper based on past sales and frequency if you wait it out for a bit. They've been really cheap like that 3 or 4 times over the last couple months or so.

It's been particularly agonizing looking at how cheap the T420 is right now. Combined with the 10% ecoupon and also getting the DOS version, my configured specs for a T420 comes up to only $683.39 - 9cell batt, screen upgrade, Centrino 6205, fingerprint reader, camera, the rest default - and that's already including taxes (free shipping). I have to keep reminding myself that I don't actually need the T420 lol

You guys in US are lucky. I am configuring a X220 with i7 processor, 8GB ram, iPS screen, HDD 320GB and 3 yrs accident warranty -- it costs me more than ¥220,000 (~USD 2700)!!!

Thing is, especially with the quality problems observed thus far, is it really sensible to buy one of these without an on site, next business day and, for that matter, ADH wtty? A new one costs around $300 for 3 years, about $75 less for 2, $75 more less for one. With the three year, plust BT ($25) you're looking at over $1,000. A great price for this computer - providing the screen doesn't become Casper the Friendly Ghost, lol, but not the lowball $758 people bandy around, much less the Core i3s with medos for $560, great if you are going to bootleg th OS and, again, not bother with a wtty. Though, I guess if I was only paying $550, I might just forgo the wtty too.

Well, other than the compactness and the dubious IPS screen in the X220, that 420 is more of everything for very little size or weight penalty. Hard to feel good about buying the x220 for the same price - unless I get lucky with my screen. Otherwise, every single X220 Lenovo has sold must be returned because of the defective screen and, while lacking the features of the IPS screen, you can get the T420 in a 1600 X 900, so if you don't need color accuracy for your work, and you are not terribly space constrained, I find it hard to justify the X220 over the T420 for the same money. Anyone?

Yup I ordered the X220 as well. Too bad the JULY4TH eCoupon is only 7% off if you're already ordering through B&N or corporate pricing.

    My config:

ThinkPad X220 - 1 Yr Depot Topseller Warranty
    Processor Intel Core i5-2410M Processor (2.3GHz, 3MB L3, 1333MHz FSB)
Operating system Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Will be installing my own Win7 Ult
Operating system language Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64 English
Display type 12.5" HD (1366x768) LED Backlit Display, Mobile Broadband Ready, 2x2 Antenna
Total memory 2 GB DDR3 - 1333MHz (1 DIMM) Recently bought 8 gigs of RAM from Newegg's July 4 Sale to replace
    Keyboard Keyboard US English
    Fingerprint reader Fingerprint Reader
    Camera 720p HD Camera
Hard drive 320 GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
Battery ThinkPad Battery 29++ (9 cell)
    Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 (2x2 AGN)

    Original price: $1,515.00
    Sale price: $815.15
    [JULY4TH]: -$57.06
    S/H: $0.00
    Tax: $47.38
    Estimated Total: $805.47

I figured that there will probably be an even better deal (maybe get it for another 100 bucks less) if I wait another month or two, but I'd rather get this early to prep for school which starts soon for me.

So, in the end, instead of rushing in to buy at the time this thread was created, I saved around $150 by ordering a few days later. It was surely a good decision to listen to all of your advice to wait.

Look what Lenovo Canada emailed me. X220 for $479. Must of been a typo though cause when I went to their site the cheapest I could get it was around $679.

how come lenovo USA does not have an official ebay reseller? All the resellers on eBay are selling way above the official price.
