I'm a laptop newbie and just got a Lenovo 3000 N100. Just wondering..it's not the fan (I don't think..when the fan comes on it seems to sound different)..but something is making a sort of high-pitched whirring sound just whenever I use my computer. It comes on and off all the time. It's low-grade but slightly annoying. Is this normal? Is it just the fan working at a lower level? If not, what could it be?

I get that when my wireless and wired cards are downloading or uploading. Also, there should be a BIOS update to fix some of the sounds.

Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure if it makes a difference but even when my wireless options are completely off, it makes that noise. BIOS..where would one find such things..what are they?

Thanks in advance to anyone who posts to help.

Here is a good explanation about what is BIOS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BIOS

To find update for your 3000 N100, find your model # (should look something or similar like the one in my sig, 17097HU) and go here. If you do not have you model # memorized, you can also "Auto Detect" by using (Internet Explorer)IE6 or IE7RC1/B3. After that, go to the dowload rivers software section and look for the BIOS section. You can update if you want. HOWEVER!!!!Remember to read the instructions and warnings as a bad BIOS "flashing," as it is called, can "brick" you laptop. In other words, just a pile of useless plastic and metal.: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=HOME-LENOVO

I also read somewhere that the noise can come from the battery, or from the processor. Its nothing bad.

You can also use the "Lenovo Care" icon or press the button on the top part of the keyboard to also acess the "Lenovo Care" feature. This will automatically take care of all of the downloads your computer might need.
