    Hi,

I've had a ThinkPad T400 for about 4 months now (with Windows 7). Since I know about the issue with Windows 7 and switchable graphics (upon hibernation), from day 1 I set the graphics option in BIOS to integrated only. Then today I decided to try out the discreet. Once I switched it to discreet only, the fan would constantly come on, sometimes very loud, whenever I watch something on youtube. I find this odd because when under integrated I could play a light game or a 720p video on youtube without any fan noise, yet with discreet it would become VERY loud when watching a normal video.

Is this supposed to happen with the discreet graphics?

Also, the fan noise quiets down about 10 seconds after I close the video.. but it's bothering me. The fan is also a lot noisier when I turn on the computer (during the boot screens).

    Thanks for your input!

Weird... My fan isn't bothersome to me even when I lock it into 3500RPM.

Grab TPFanControl and check GPU temperature readings and fan speeds on discrete mode. Perhaps the BIOS is messing up the fan steppings; I'm pretty sure it has different thresholds for discrete or integrated.

install TPfancontrol and look at what temperature your GPU gets to.

The loud fan noise when laptop starts is existent on most thinkpads, it is a self diagnostic check up to see whether the fan works.

Check with the tpfancontrol to see the rpm of the fan when on integrated and discrete gpu.

It shouldn't get really noisy for watching 720p movies.

Maybe you could install flash 10.1 beta and see if it helps.

That will help you with playing 720p Youtube vids with the integrated card
