So my new work laptop is a T420. I have messed around with three physical units and all three of them have had the exact same issue.

When shutting down or restarting from Windows the Explorer.exe process hangs, does not die and brings the process to a halt unless you manually intervene and click on the Force Close button.

I have never run into this issue before. This is happening on every shut down or as close to every as makes little difference.

I am running Windows 7 Enterprise 32 bit.

I have run Windows 7 Enterprise 32 and 64 bit on T61's, T400's and T410's with the same configuration and applications and not experienced the issue.

It seems to be something with the 420.

In the current situation the only applications that are installed are McAfee Anti-virus, MS Office 2007 and Lotus Notes. Aside from that it is a standard Windows 7 installation with default Windows 7 applications.

I am, of course, doing some research on my own to see what might be causing the issue.

However, if anyone here has any insight, it would be much appreciated.

    Thanks!

I could find nothing to explain the issue.

    It was on SP1.

Updating Windows with all patches and updating all drivers did not resolve it.

I ended up giving the "official" company image the finger and just installed the OS, updated, and then manually installed all applications.

    Works like a charm now.

Did you possibly have a non reachable mapped drive?

You likely had a buggy broswer extension.

Use toolbarcop (from ccnet.com is a safe copy) to list all broswer extensions and allows you to remove them. Sysinternals has a tool too but is more complex to use.

I am having the Same issue I have two t420 64bit running the factory image and they both are having issues with it booting to a black screen and explore.exe hanging up. It is only on there log ins when I log in with my Admin account it boots up just fine but when I reboot and have them try they still get black screen and upon rebooting 5 or 6 times it will work. I have a t420 I made a fresh image from scratch and that one works with out issue. So unless I can find a fix I will be re imaging these to Laptops today.
