Do you guys think Lenovo will release a BIOS which might recognize Ivy Bridge CPUs on the current generation of Thinkpads? Or will most of us have to wait until we decide our current Thinkpads are obsolete and get a new one?

The latest article I found (dated May 2011) claimed backwards compatibility to be limited to select desktop chipsets only.
-
I guess the i7 2620M is soldered on the motherboard of my X220 so I'd give up aftermarket upgrade.
-
I dont think SB and IB are even socket compatable just like the first gen core i and SB were not, my guess is a STRONG no.

They are socket compatible. However, the mobile chipsets won't be backwards compatible from what I've read. I believe a BIOS update would solve it *but* we know how Lenovo works on these matters.

I still remember that Lenovo offered BIOS update for T60 to support the Core 2 Duo CPUs on top of the old Core Duo CPUs. I upgraded from a T2400 (which is a 32-bit CPU) to a T7200 (which is a 64-bit CPU). Without the BIOS update, the T60 refused to boot with the T7200.

is it really soldered ? ... bummer.
I also think the new CPU line will not be compatible with the previous generation. If I were Intel I'm surely not gonna make it compatible .. LOL -
I'd much rather they fixed the warm-boot delay issue with certain SSDs and the sleep/resume issue when using 1866Mhz RAM with dGPU enabled. Anyway, I just bought a i7-2960XM to upgrade my i7-2720QM equipped W520.
Here's the article I used as a source.
Ivy Bridge CPUs for the current generation of Thinkpads.
