I literally JUST purchased a Lenovo Y500 from newegg, which has the dual 650m in SLI. It's currently on its way, so i haven't opened it yet. But of course, Nvidia just announced the 700m series cards, with what seems to be significant improvements in the 750m vs 650m (15%-20% gain).
AnandTech | NVIDIA
so my question is, should i return the y500 ( while its still unopenend) and hold out for when lenovo releases the y500 using the upgraded 750M gpu ? so far they've only announced the y400 with the 750m, but i would think its only a matter of time until they upgrade the y500. it seems like i could not have picked a worser time to purchase it haha. any thoughts?
-
I would return and hold on for the refreshed option.. but it all depends on whether or not you are in an imminent need of a laptop or if you can wait a little longer
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus -
it's a tough call indeed. 25% better graphics performance is nothing to sneeze at... -
Same thoughts too. Just got a y400 4 days ago. Pretty happy with the purchase and the money I saved on it knowing the 700s are right around the corner. No change in architecture for the 700s so not a big deal. But a nice step up for less the money I paid for my M11X R3 in 2011 and seems to overclock well based on what I've read in the below thread but have yet to try.

Save your money and overclock your GT 650 SLI !!!

Middle of the article, right before the specs. -
The idea of auto overclock is pretty neat.
But I'd rather game on 15.6" with full resolution>14" at 720. -
I would wait if it's only 1 or 2 months unless you really need a laptop now and it is crucial for school or work. Ignore the people that tells you not to wait because they have no choice now since they are stuck with their old tech.

It's already out, unless is a mistake IdeaPad Y400 14" Laptop | Shop | Lenovo | (CA)
-
Estimated ship date: 11/04/13**
US still says 650M, CA says 750M. Can OP wait till November to get the laptop? -
I would honestly go with the Y500 with the GT650M it's still kepler or a higher clocked version of it.
If overclocking happens to come back to the Nvidia drivers after 314.22 you might be able to get the same performance out of it.
The GT650M GDDR5 is a beast already for a laptop. I was surprised to see ArmA 2 and 3 run at good settings. -
I say its best to wait to see real world results first... they always say its so many percentages faster and in real world terms it only 5 to 10% at most.
-
I am very satisfied with my Y500 GT 650M SLI setup.
Using the default 306.00 nVidia (Lenovo) drivers, I can overclock singe and SLI and get enough fps to run all the games I play (rFactor, rFactor2, GPL, F1 2010). -
I was hit with the same dilema, I just got my Y500 last weekend and I was debating returning it. But I didn't do it for a few reasons. The new 700M GPU's don't seem to be a significant improvement over the 600M. The only difference that I noticed was the Power Boost 2.0 Overclocking. If I were to return it, I'd have to pay for a 15% restocking fee and wait who knows how long for it to be refreshed. I didn't think it would be worth it. Plus after using it for a few days the performance was amazing so I wouldn't be able to go back to my old laptop and wait.
-
You are going to wait and then the gt800 are going to be released, this is tech world
enjoy the present.
-
Buying any laptop is always bad timing. The second you buy it it's already out of date. I say stick with the one you ordered because you will be surprised how well it performs and I'm quite sure that given a year or two, people here at NBR will find the max limits of the Y series laptops and push them even further than they already have. Besides, if you really had to have the best/fastest laptop, you'd have bought a $2000 boutique machine that still would have been instantly out-dated when purchased.
-
hi guys, I ended up being too impatient and wound up purchasing the y500 and opening the box. now of course im stuck with it, in spite of the fact that as shown above, the updated y500 with 750m is already available for purchase on Lenovo's site and shipping 4/16/2013. oh wells, you live and learn
on the bright side, I played bioshock infinite on 1900x1080 on very high settings and the thing performed beautifully, barely any hiccups in framerates at all. a 650m in SLI seems fine on its own, even if its not the 750m we're hoping for. of course, now I have to deal with this annoying trackpad issue I posted about on another thread. otherwise its a fine fine machine. -
Glad you like it. I know i'm enjoying mines.
Do you guys think the new 750m version will come with sli capabilities and a spare gpu
To go along with it? -
Talked to a sales rep at Lenovo about the GT 750M SLI and he couldn't give me anything solid. He suggested I keep checking back.
-
Well hopefully we can be expecting the 750m sli soon. Once thats released im for sure pulling the trigger on that. I dont even care to wait for Haswell CPUs. All I care about is the GPU.
-
Has Lenovo made any kind of statement regarding the availability of gt750m SLI cards? Or is it pretty much all speculation?
Would the gt650m SLI card work in SLI with a 750m? -
Nice link, it seems to have no relevance to anything at all?
I've decided to wait until Amazon or Newegg or someone picks up the 750m SLI. Only question is if lenovo will ever do that or not. I'd prefer to buy 750m and I dont want to futz around with buying extra power adapters. I just want to buy a complete package and be good to go -
I didn't click the link but i think SLI limitation is that it has to be the same model GPU so 650 won't work with 750
-
-
If I've already bought the original with the 650m SLI, is there no way I can get a refund?
-
Have they announced a GT750 SLI version at all..??

I am still within my 21 days. They just put the Y400 up for $750 with the 750m and the 1TB + 16GB cache. Not a bad deal. Need to find out about the SLI ultrabay though. A) If they are moving to the 750m in the UB, does that mean I am out of luck to get a 650m ultrabay or B) The UB wil be 650m only meaning no SLI for the 750m model?

Yeah I was just going to put it on a CC. But yeah its kind of a pain. But for $30 I can get the 750m and 16GB cache SSD. Also it seems they are using a Li-On battery instead of Li-Poly which seems strange. From what I have read the 750m is more like a re-badged 660m rather than 650m. I figure since I am within the 21 days might as well get the latest and greatest. Even if they discontinue the SLI card and not have a matching 750m, it was still going to be my last upgrade. I am still thinking about it since the sales rep hasn't returned my email. On the other side of things I would be upset if all of the sudden the ultrabay had a 750m card in it and not the 650m and I couldn't run SLI anyway, then I would be upset I didn't jump on the upgrade when I could.
-
i would wait for both haswell and 750m. who knows, haswell could be just right around the corner.
-
I've returned mine already and the new one is already with UPS. It should be at my door within 5 days. However, I order the extra bay since they provided a discount with me, and while ordering the sales guy confirmed that the bay indeed has the 750m GPU (He made me wait for a while to check with the technical support). Anyway, if he is by any chance wrong, I can return it and get a refund.
According to Lenovo's website, he is wrong because in the specification of the bay it shows the old chip of NVidia which is 650m. But also we can think that they may not be as quick as we think and not update their website accordingly.
So, anyway I am taking the risk and see what happens. I will keep you guys update about the bay. I am surprised that the system shipped 7 days earlier than the estimated date. -

I second this. All of it seems like "it should work (750+650)" but it would be nice to know. Someone said that the 750 would just be clocked to 650 speeds, which would be fine since you would be getting the SLI performance boost (IMO). Going to be working with a rep today to get mine, hopefully with yesterday's pricing. -
Hopefully people will start releasing their benchmarks on the 750m gpu soon. I'm curious how the two card will compare when each is overclocked.
-
I will definitely release some benchmark with 3d mark as soon as I swap the hdd with the ssd & msata (but I have to receive the system first; another few days to go, because of the weekend).

Good news guys! Go and check out the Lenovo Y500 models. They now updated one model with a GT 750m SLI setup.
IdeaPad Y500 | Lenovo | (US)
I also talked to a rep. She said they only have the preinstalled and are not selling the ultra bay separably just yet. -
really want one for my Y400
-
-
Yup. It is confirmed on the official Lenovo site.
When you go to their products comparison page for all their various y500's configs for sale, if you clicked the "show all model differences below" button, if you looked under the "optical device bay" category, you will see that under the Dual graphics option column the description states "Ultrabay SLI Graphics - NVIDIA GeForce GT750M GDDR5 2GB" -

They have announced it, my friend ordered his Y500 with 750m sli this weekend. Though according to Lenovo, it won't ship till May.
-
Guys we already confirmed this already (look on page 4), our conversation is about buying the Ultrabays separately and for the Y400. Also a sales rep told me that the ultrabays will be sold within a month. So it could be any time soon.
-
My system will arrive at my door tomorrow (according to UPS) and as soon as I will have it setup and ready, it will be my pleasure to post few benchmarks for everyone. My old system was 750 plus tax and the current one is 800 plus tax. I lost about $50 in the bargain but I gained a better GPU and battery according to the specifications.
P.S. I just hope that Lenovo have not done a mistake and sent me the system with the old GPU, I will return the system with my eyes closed and I will never look back at them... I just cannot believe how many idioXX work for Lenovo. Sales reps tell me that I have to get to the technical support to find out about the GPU and when I speak to the technical team, they are telling me that I cannot swap the GPU from the system, it will void my warranty. I think you guys get the picture, there is no need to say more... -

Look at your part number. If its 59371952, 59371954, or 59371958 (for the Y400) then they have the 750m. Hopefully mine isn't delayed that much, ordered on 4/12 which is right around when they were hitting the website. Nothing in my status indicates a delay although the estimated ship date was 4/13 and that didn't happen. So who knows.
-
Didn't lose any money on my side. The sales rep was able to match the price I got last time with my 650m Y400. $720 plus tax. YOu probably could have pulled this off too.
Lets cross our fingers this these are not mistakesI confirmed multiple times with the sales rep on the phone that the one I'm getting is the one with the 750m.

I was able to get the one with the 16 GB SDD for $750 (its now at 800) because they had it for that price when I had initially talked to my sales rep. So they honored that price. So for me I ended up paying $30 more for the 16GB SDD (not a huge deal but waiting for SSD prices to come down so its a nice compromise) and the upgraded 750m. Also looks like the battery is Li-Ion vs. Li- Polymer. I wonder if that makes a difference. So while some might think the 16GB SSD is a waste, it will at least provide some speed increase.
JUST purchased a Lenovo Y500, bad timing?
