How did you find out about the Lenovo [ThinkPad] brand? At my school, nearly everyone either has a Mac, Dell, HP, Toshiba, etc... And then about 1% or less have ThinkPads.

I have to admit that I never heard of ThinkPads up until a year or two ago when my sibling brought one home which prompted me to research the brand (to which I found out that ThinkPad used to be owned by IBM and that is a brand I heard of before back when I was a child lol).

I don't watch TV so I do not know if Lenovo have Thinkpad commercials. And I know that ThinkPads aren't easily found in stores. So how did you find out? :)

My college has a contract with Lenovo and nearly every person has one on campus. They defiantly don't advertise them a lot, but they seem to sell quite a few of them.

The university I'm going to (NYU-Poly) has a contract with Lenovo as well. So we get discount prices through the school site and are encouraged to get a Thinkpad because the technicians at the uni are more familiar with them.

Basically thats when I first started to look into Thinkpads. And just in case anyone cares, the prices at the school site are actually worse than Lenovo's site (with sales).

Ours is the same way. It was almost $2,000 for my T61 and I could've gotten it for $1,400 at the time. But they fix them on site for free, and if you destroy it, they'll give you a shiny one for free. So i guess it works out in the end.

Ah nice, well that does make it worth it.

For us, the school just suggests that we get a 3 yr warranty with accident protection =.=

My dad had a company issued Thinkpad in 2000 (T22). I was amazed at the time how it could feel just as fast as our desktop while still being a portable laptop. Also was well made and really solid feeling. I didn't really like the trackpoint at the time though, but I like mine now (I guess they improved it through the last 8 years (got my T61p in 2008).

It's a corporate brand. I bet you see even less HP Elitebooks and Dell Latitudes. I've seen half a dozen Dell Latitudes and half that many Elitebooks on campus. Most people here have a Thinkpad bought through our school program. There's a lot of Mac users around here too, though they're the minority. I've noticed that different majors seem to have different concentrations of Thinkpad users. Nearly all engineering majors have the school Thinkpad, management and humanities are mostly Mac users, and for mine, department of biology, there's half and half Mac and Thinkpad groups.

They don't have commercials on TV. They do advertise on the internet.

The thinkpad name is legendary. when i first saw one, it sure looks very bland, and does not look as flashy as other model at the time, but overtime i began to like the design more and more because its there to serve a purpose.

it used to be from IBM. still sort of is (same development team and support, the difference is the owner who is supplying the cash).

Ah I see, makes sense. Sorta wished my school offered ThinkPads but then again, I like how mine is unique/old-looking among the pools of laptops in the classroom. I actually get a little excited whenever I see a ThinkPad at school because it's rare. ha

    Totally agree. :D

Yep, my school bookstore also has a contract with Lenovo. But, it seems like Mac is still more popular than any brands I have noticed in class...1% for Lenovo users seem to be the norm, and not many of them have the ThinkPad T as well.
One main reason I think Dell, HP and some other Asian brands are among the popular laptop choices at school is the price differences...

Thanks for posting that Lenovo F1 Video. I'm watching the Spanish Grand Prix qualifying now. Man that BMW Sauber team car looks funny with a Burger King logo, lol.

Lenovo is kind of a mysterious company. In North America they aren't nearly as focused on marketing towards consumers as Dell, HP, and all the others are. But they are still successful in marketing to enterprise customers.

    Here's my favorite Lenovo add.

And here's the worst Lenovo add ever..lol

Anyways on topic now, I found out a few years back when one of my old teachers got an IBM Thinkpad. I know. Not very interesting.

I thought this was somewhat funny/cute, but it only caters to the geek crowd (which was probably its intention)…

Cute. I think we need to start a new thread that focuses on poking fun at Apple’s products—I’d be very entertained.

I first heard of the Thinkpad's many years ago (probably early 2000's or so). But never really saw one in person (NO retail stores in my area had one, and if they did, it was WAY overpriced, and the "R" series, which I wanted a T series).
Anyway, my at the time girlfriend's father worked as a head nuclear engineer for a major power company, and he was issued a T60 as his take home laptop. I LOVED that thing lol Pure, simple and meant business.
So, I went to the Lenovo website in 2008, and ordered a brand new T61. I'm actually thankful I found out about Thinkpad when I did, because if I bought one a few years earlier I was told the starting price for a basic Thinkpad was like well north of $2,000+. And a good optioned T series was like $3,000+
My how the times have changed.

First saw a Thinkpad when my dad got his company-issue T42 (which cost ~$3000). I liked it right away, but when it was time for me to buy my first new laptop, Thinkpads were way too expensive. But when it came time for me to buy my next laptop, the T-series was not only a great well-rounded machine, but was also affordable.

I first saw a IBM thinkpad in one of my Ex girlfriend's home. I didnt ever know she has a computer. That was at least eight years ago. At that time, most laptops other than thinkpad looks like crap and macintosh looks like toys from Toys re us. From that day on, i always want a thinkpad but it cost too much before. i have to wait until 2006 december to get my first thinkpad T60p for $1400. Then W510. Then X201. Then X100e. Maybe men should stay away from Thinkpad!
