Hi all Im new to the IBM/Lenovo boards I just went from my old trusty or maybe not so trusty acer 1710 to a T42 and I have a few questions. One I got it brand new with a 2.0 Ghz cpu a Gig of ram and the Ati 9600 for 1,095.00 with free fedex overnight shipping was that a good deal? Two I want to upgrade the hardrive from its 40 gig(way to small for me) to over 100 or so what HD does it use is it a standard ata 100 ide harddrive or is it a small laptop drive(heres hoping its a regular ata drive do to the price of laptop drives)
Finally is the t42 a good machine or did i make the wrong choice?

    That's a hell of a price. It's almost a giveaway.

The T42, like most laptops, uses a standard 2.5" laptop hard drive. Yes, these cost more than desktop drives, but what are you going to do. Most laptop hard drives don't go beyond 100GB, even though there is some new 160GB model.

Oh, by the way, it's a kickass machine. Yes, not as appealing as the new dual cores, but for the price you got it - I'd get two myself!

For that price point, I'd abandon my ASUS Core Duo watch (I think) for this...will you provide the path to this price point to me?

    Thanks ahead of the message.

I don't think so. I have an EPP account from a friend, and the best deal that was on there was a T42 1.7GHZ, 256RAM, 40GB, ATI 9600 for $949+tax

so he must have got it somewhere else

""Finally is the t42 a good machine or did i make the wrong choice?""

You've made a very wrong choice, but I could spare your frustration and give you half of what you paid for it and take it from you for parts. Get a DUO or AMD64 machine, they come with HUGE drives, the one's you need and I will take your el cheapo T42 and give it to my kid to play UT if it no good for any parts.

NO core DUO? Shudda gone for the T60. But APRICORN makes a HD swap kit with EZ GIG software for fast swaps. Works great

Good luck with the 42, T60 is next generation

    Oh, that's funny!! (sides splitting!!!)
Why would you say that Turion64 machines come with huge drives, or was that just part of your overall joke?
I don't think he will have any issues dropping the largest possible PATA drive into his T42.

It was purchased new in box all wrapped up. Im going to get a second harddrive in it soon most likely a 100gig ibm/hitachi(just orderd that for about 150.00) the 2nd harddrive holder will run me about 35.00 bucks i think. Going with a 2nd harddrive sounds better than replacing whats in it but I wonder how that will effect battery life Im considering getting a 9 cell battery for it.

It would be great appreciated by many if you would let us know where you bought your new T42. Sound like you got a great deal...one that I know I would like to take advantage of if possible!
