The t400 doesnt seem to be much better except for the backlight screen (which you have to pay as an upgrade) and probably better battery life with the p8300 and hybrid graphic cards.
Not sure if it is really worth 30-40% more than the t61

Here is my t61 config that I want to order:

    Intel Core 2 Duo processor T8300 (2.4GHz 800MHz 3MBL2)1

    1 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 (1 DIMM)
    Integrated fingerprint reader
    160GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm4
    DVD Recordable, Ultrabay Slim5
    9 cell Li-Ion Battery60

    Battery60 9 cell Li-Ion Battery
Power cord 90W AC Adapter; NA, LA, (2pin)
Publication Language English US Publication for Vista

ThinkPlus 3 Year EasyServ Total for 1 Year EasyServ ThinkPad

Yeah, the T61 is a great machine. Obviously, the T400 is the newer machine, so if you want the absolutely latest, then you would go for that. If that doesn't bother you, then you can go for the T61. The good part about the T61 is that it has been throughly tested by the users and almost any and all problems have been brought to light. You can be pretty confident with buying it that it will be solid.

How's the heat/fan noise for the T61 with nvidia discrete graphics? I'm leaving the country August 23rd for a few years and I don't think I can get the T400 in time... :(

I don't think you are missing much not going with the T400. The T61 is a great machine. In fact they have some really great prices on them. The T400 has a few new nice features, but the nothing seems like a huge upgrade to me.
I have the 15.4" T61p and the machine is very silent even when the fan comes on. I have not experienced any heat or noise issues what so ever. I simply love the machine. I usually surf the web and type documents with it. I do also game casually and it runs fine. No complaints....

The only big reason to get the T400 over the T61 would be the increased battery life with LED screen and hybrid graphics, but other than that the two machines are very competitive.

With a T61 and 9 Cell, I can get over 4.5 hours of battery life with WiFi on after undervolting my CPU with RMClock. With the Ultrabay battery installed, 6 hours with WiFi on is definitely possible. If you need more than this, then you will want to seriously consider the T400 instead.
