I like it. I looks great in person and it feels like a solid build.

However, it seems to run a bit hotter than I thought. After a brief gaming session the cores were all in the mid 80's for max temps. That isn't really alarming, but it is higher than I anticipated. Are others getting similar temps? I plan using this as a mobile rig for a number years since the ultra bay SLI will keep it relevant for a few years at least.

Also, I've looked for info on the ultrabay and its seems there is little out there right now. Is there a plan to have just a place holder for the bay? I'd like just a grill or something to cut some weight when I don't need the ODD. I guess the fan unit would suffice though, if it ever comes out.

yes the temps are that high in my y500 while running fifa it actually is quite normal im my opinion
according to a malaysian fourm ultra bays will come on mid december. this rumor is unreliable but still they are comming.
i am actually more excited for an ultra bay battrey than the graphics

Quick question, what model y400 did you buy? I purchased the most base model ($749 + tax) off the main Lenovo site, and while most users and manuals claim that it comes with an ultrabay, the spec sheet when purchasing did not state that at all. I am curious if the ones up on the site currently do not offer SLI capability.

i do not have much information about the y400 but the noise and the heat problem are very similar in both the 500 and the 400.
i think the optical drive is the one that is in the ultrabay
as for sli i think you need a separate adapter to power it up .

my y400's gpu maxes at 71C and cpu maxes around 84C.

These temps are perfectly normal and the gpu temps are really impressive for a laptop. The copper heatsink probably helps

as long as you are far from 100C, you do not have to worry.

How loud are the fans when gaming and idle?

It gets a little warm under long gaming, but the fan and large underside mesh vent seem to work. Looking forward to buying an ultrabay second fan for the right side to help keep it cool.

My main gripe is that at 1366x768 the display is not high contrast, very bright, and grainy/fuzzy.
Is it windows 8? Is there some truetype font update I'm missing?
    Curse of the 14" 1366x768?
I'm tempted to return it and get the Y500 with 1920x1080 display, but I REALLY love the smaller size of the Y400.

My damn MBP retina spoiled me, but this Y400 runs games smoother and cooler.

    thoughts?

    thanks in advance

In looking to see how to remove the bottom "louver" since only half pops up and I'm afraid of snapping plastic ...
came across the hardware maintenance manual
    http://download.lenovo.com/consumer...y400y500_hmm_1st_edition_sep_2012_english.pdf

Was also curious if there was a better panel you could swap to....
It does spell out the parts for the 2nd VGA, 2nd Fan, and 2nd HDD
14" LCD seems to just be different manufacturers.

May need the 170W adapter for SLI, mine came with the 120W

Anyone able to remove the bottom mesh cover?

a second fan is a waste of money if your pc does not throttle or have any heat issues.

Just because you think it runs a little warm does not mean you have to go and try to make it ice cool. It is within spec.

1366 lcd panels are all crap in terms of color and contrast.

It is also impossible to upgrade because you won't find an lvds cable that will allow an upgrade to 1600x900.

so if it really bothers you, you should get the 15"

I realize it is within specs, but it was higher than I anticipated from some of the early reviews. Just wanted to see what temps others were getting.

How good of a job do they do on thermal paste on these? I'm just curious as I've never owned a lenovo before. If the heat does get worse over, I might repaste it to see if it helps any.

As far as the screeen, it is really a trade-off between size and quality. I wanted a smaller form factor but still wanted power while traveling. I tried an M11x for a year or so, but it is too small for my eyes alot of the time. I think the Y400 is a good compromise and the price has been right lately.

the problem with comparing your heat with other people's heat is that your room temperatures are different.

room temp has a huge impact on cpu temp.

Getting an ultrabay fan would mostly be a filler, I've pulled the DVD drive to cut weight, and help airflow as CD/DVD is pointless in a streaming world. Apple with the MBP realized it was unnecessary, and ditched it to cut space/weight. If you really need it, you can get an external USB for 40 bucks.

It really attracts finger prints on the inside surfaces.

When will ultrabay options be available? I'm ready to order.

Kinda wish the sub menu button on the right side was another FN button so I could one handed adjust volume and brightness, other than that, loving my Y400...

I know this is a couple of weeks old but figured I'd throw my two cents in. I recieved my y400 on the 24th, after getting everything installed and set up I'm loving it. As far as temps go i agree with it running a bit warm, i think its just nature of the beast though. I did a 5 hour straight session of SWTOR last night with everything turned up to max, every time i checked it i was in the mid 70's, but somewhere during that session i did spike to 89°c to 93°c aross the cores,it was just a spike, it seems to consistently run in the high 70's to low 80's during full stress gaming for me.
