I just got my T400 today and I am very impressed. It is a great laptop, but I have a question. How do I make it run faster, I know you clean out the unwanted programs and what not, but I dont know what to clean out.

    Thanks.

Personally, I removed almost all the ThinkVantage utilities except Active Protection, Power Manager, Presentation Director, and Rescue and Recovery (which I disabled automatic backups in).

Some people remove more, and some people remove less. I know many people use Access Connections, but I find it somewhat buggy and bloated.

Also, just as a reminder, make sure to create your factory recovery disks, by double-clicking on the Lenovo partition in My Computer. Alternatively, you can find and click on "Create Recovery Media" in your start menu under "Thinkvantage".

You should also get rid of the Office 2007 trial version, unless you really want to play with it. I also have a sqlserver install on my machine, not sure why, but I will be getting rid of that. There is also a C++ install, once again not sure why but I am getting rid of that too. Basically anything trial versions is a good place to start. The Thinkvantage apps are subjective. Some people use them so don't and some only use a few of them. I have found power manager invaluable so far. I am playing with Access connection but am not having too good luck. If I can't resolve the problems with that then i will probably remove it.

I'm guessing that's visual C++, which is used by some applications (although I don't remember which off the top of my head). Best not to touch it.

You could do a clean install, that's what I did and my T400 is a lean and mean machine. Heck, I use shutdown more than standby because of how quick it starts up and is usable. (Don't flame me! Notebooks generate heat in standby and hence it's not good when they're in a tight sleeve).

You may want to save on a flash key your OEM activated Windows files so that you could install Windows Vista (your version) in the next future if you prefer to do a clean install.

Yeah you are right. I thought that just after I typed it. I will leave it alone and while uninstalling bloatware see if one of the pieces of software uninstalls it as a dependency.
