I have not had a laptop for a while. I don't know how the portability is with the Y580 but should I get a smaller laptop or take the Y580 around with me?
What is good maintenance for it and are their ways to speed it up like taking off the themes etc?

Try it, if not get a 10" tablet.
As for maintenance, install fresh copy of Windows. Does it run better then before? Who knows. But I can't stand bloatwares on my laptops. -
I can't speak for the portability since I don't have it in my hands yet, but in terms of maintenance, I found this guide to be really helpful.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-compaq/432564-hp-laptop-out-box-guide-2-0-windows-7-a.html
It's written for HP laptops, but most of it is general points that can be used for any laptop really. -
Keeping any computer healthy and running fast isn't hard at all. However it does require a little diligence on your part.
- Make sure you are using a good antivirus. I've been using Microsoft security essentials for a while and it's been great. Doesn't take up too many system resources and it does a good job. Just using an antivirus isn't enough. Make sure you update your definitions, DAILY. Let it auto update on a daily basis. Doesn't require you to do anything. Run a full scan once a week and a quick scan whenever you want to.
- Have a firewall running as well. For most people, windows firewall is enough. However you might want to look into something like Comodo if you want more advanced options.
- Use CCleaner, Glary utilities or a similar program to keep windows clean. Both of these programs will delete unnecessary files and also keep your registry clean. Run this once a week. As far as deleting files, they are both great, but I find that Glary does a more thorough job on the registry.
- Either use MSCONFIG or Glary to disable any and all programs and services that are starting with windows that you don't need. This is the biggest cause of windows sluggishness when you first turn your pc on. You can disbale a bunch of things that don't need to run every time windows starts.
-DEFRAG. This is key to keeping things running quickly and efficiently. Smart Defrag is great and it should be run once a week. DO NOT use a defrag program on an SSD.
Those are the major things that you need to actively do, but there are always common sense things that people sometimes forget.
- Keep windows updated
- Keep drivers updated
- Don't visit shady sites
Might seem like a lot, but it's really not and it's a small amount of effort to keep your pc running perfectly. Aside from hardware failure, the main reason why PCs go bad is due to neglect. Be diligent and your machine will run perfectly. -
one more thing to add: run the malwarebytes once a month to remove any malwares. It's free.
Once I could barely connect to the internet for a week and finally I downloaded malwarebytes. Found there were 30 malwares on my E420. After removing them my internet connection was back to normal. -
Wow thanks guys.
What about physically maintenance ? Like dust and stuff?
I am thinking of getting a portable book. the Y580 may be too bulky and cumbersome to move around. it's replacing my desktop. -

Animal, I've got the same issue as you.
I'm going back to law school and I need a portable laptop that I can easily bring with me to class/study groups/cafe/etc. Unfortunately my dreams were shattered when I found out that the y480 does not come with the gt650/gtx660m, instead it comes with a 640m le. It seems that MOST portable laptops are coming with the gt 640m le, which is a gimped version of a gt 640m. The only one which has my hopes is the Gigabyte u2442n, which isn't released in the states just yet. I'd check out the 13" Sony Viao S, which unfortunately does have the gt 640m le, but at least its small and compact. I really don't do a lot of gaming anymore, so that sony might fit the bill for me. Here is a review of vaio's gaming power Sony VAIO S 13.3 Gaming Demo - YouTube
What do you plan on using the notebook for? -
The sonyis way way out of my budget though
I cant spend more 500-550. I want around a 11" to small -
Discover Nexus Devices
Since you got a laptop which is portable, why not get a tablet. If you really need a computer at school/work, you can pack up your Y580. Gawd, i remember owning a 17" 10lb beast... that thing was heavy and hassle to move to places to place... -
Is that able to run programs like ms word spreadsheets and cad programs? Youtube etc? I do like the ipad but it cAnt do what i want it to do
-
Guess you figured out I had pre-ordered Google Nexus 7 tablet. Can't wait for it to arrive -
Is it comfortable to write on tablet? I mean...software keyboard. I tried few times but without physical feedback it was hard. But maybe you're using tablet for something else...in school :>.
-
Well, I don't lot of typing as data entry so I guess I am fine with a tablet. Mostly killing time at work lol...
-
ok great thanks guys!
