Could you post a picture of the t400 and t500 side by side to see how much difference there is? (screen-wise) LED vs CCFL
-
You ought to PM him as well, just in case he misses this thread.
-
okay, but how...nvm
-
and if you get a response keltix let me know by posting here or you can pm me. im interested too!
-
indeed, im still not quite sure i made the right choice with the t500
(the t400 price drop didnt help) -
i really think the T500 will prove to be a good choice with time.

Dont have the T500 with me at home tonight, so the T60 Flexview will have to do.

Anyone steals these before my full review comes up and I will hunt you down RAWR lol
edit: the images look more horrible than they should because I used paint to edit the things for this post.Attached Files:

Wow, thank you. I know i'm not the one that requested it but they give me a good idea of the viewing angles and the brightness.
On another note, I think in a different thread you mentioned your disappointment in the T400 thinklight. If its not too much trouble, would it be possible to get a side-by-side comparison of the thinklights (T60 vs T400) in action? (if not here, possibly in the full review) -

The light will definitely be covered in my full review.
-
whens the full review coming?
-
im buyin the t500 tomorrow, hopefully this review doesnt make me change my mind once again, ive only done that 30 times so far
-

Hopefully by the end of the week. The more time I spent on it the more stuff that comes up that I want you have proper coverage over (thinklight, keyboard, unibody redesign, ultrabay change, possible screen banding on the LED T400, etc). -
I want a flexview!!!
-
Sweet, thanks Kevin.

Sounds good. Thanks! -
I am glad that you are taking such a in depth look at the laptop for us. I can tell you that you are the only review that would ever take the keyboard out to compare to the T60 / T61.
-
dont forget to give a full comparison of every screw in the T400 to that in the T61
....haha kidding, we appreciate all the time you are putting into this review!
-
yea thanks alot for taking the time to do this!
-
hey, got a question. Is their any major difference between the wifi link 5100 and wifi link 5300?
-
Kevin,
would it be a good idea to publish the picture you are using in those screenshots so we can compare with our own screens? -
i asked the same question and it is my understanding that the 5100 is 1-antennae while the 5300 is 3-antennae, meaning the 5300 provides a better and stronger wireless signal. there is more to this answer but thats all that i remember
-
cheers, i think they both have Wireless N capability (which is the main reason for buying)

Thanx Kevin, now I have a good idea of how bright the T400 is, it's really impressive
-
The T400 screen looks very bright, but doesn't seem to be getting the right colours like the FlexView is. The latter's viewing angles are also better it seems.
Can the screen be calibrated to give out a better colour? -
I have a flexview T60p, I guess I am a little spoiled as I expected all laptops to have a similar screen!
-

And now for more horribly watermarked MS-paint made images.
T400 LED vs T500 normal. I was surprised how well the colors worked out even at steeper angles on the T500. Just nowhere near as bright.Attached Files:

Nice pics there.
I think the T500 screen looks fine. Looks calmer for the eyes.
-

I suppose, but sunlight reading is out of the question.
I also think the 250nit rating on that T400 panel is way underrated. I have seen 300+ nit screens that were not that bright. -
Any idea how much the LED screen is going to run when available for the T500?
-
I agree it looks extremely bright.
But I am curious if the T500 WXGA screen is on par with this WSXGA+ you got for the review unit. I am still debating which one to get.. -
I guess I should invest in a pair of prescription sunglasses so that I can use my T400 when I get it
-
HP Elitebook claims outdoor screen which I gather is on par with FlexView?
The sunlight reading issue seems to be bothering me, because I will definitely use this notebook outdoors. The two concerns I have are the wimax upgradability with existing wireless options (Which do i get and can it be upgraded to wimax) and the outdoor screen issue.
HP Elitebook chose to offer the outdoor screen while Lenovo no longer offers it. -
By the way, there is a close up shot of the T500 here with the WXGA screen, I believe:

When it comes to viewing angles and accurate colors, FlexView can't beat. Nowadays, when companies claim outdoor viewing, it means their screen is bright enough to be viewed outside and it doesn't mean it's got the color accuracy and viewing angles of IPS. I don't think FlexView was usable outdoors.
-
What do you recommend notebook wise if I wanted to use the notebook outdoors and wanted the best screen possible with a nice performing system? Would a filter over the laptop or something be what I needed where I can get by with the Lenovo LCD?
Lots of decisions and it seems like every notebook has advantages and disadvantages and I can't have it all. -
Matte screens also do better outdoor than glossy screens
-
Only 30 times...... darn, now I feel really feel like out control perfectionist.....
-
I can't decide either. I was going to go for the T400 with LCD screen, but changed my mind several times.
My 2 concerns are the wimax upgradability and which wifi option to get and screen clarity and outdoor viewing capability on the Lenovo. -
If more buyers would subscribe to your very logical, correct way of thinking there would be far less bashing of certain produces in our lightning fast tech world. ...
-
yeah, i finally settled and realized its just a laptop, not a car, not a house, not something thats going to be life changing
that being said, im still having second thoughts -
Where does HP claim that?
-
Sadly the days of the glorious IPS / Flexview are behind us, they are gone...seemingly forever.
I'm just thankful that for once I was thinking ahead and bought both a T60 & T60p w/Flexview new, when they were first released. as by then I had heard the "rumor" which was nearly unbelievable. Had I not, I would not have the stunning experience that the IPS technology offers.

The HP Elitebook 6930P is still on my radar screen as well as the Lenovo T400. I really want a business notebook that allows me to use every tool at my disposal, and every application there is in the Computer Science world since you never know when you need to run something. Gaming is not something I will be using.
I was concerned about weight, but it seems as though with smaller than 14.1" you take a performance hit and prices go up so 14.1" seems to be the sweet spot for performance and mobility.
So now my concerns are down to outdoor viewing capability, screen clarity and ability to add wimax easily and to which Wifi option I should get with the notebook itself.
As far as video, Discrete is only slightly extra so I would be looking for switchable video. It is nice to have it available in case I need an application which requires accelerated 3D. -
Very wishful thinking on the part of HP. I have both a ThinkPad T60 with SXGA+ 15" Flexview, and a T60p with a UXGA 15" Flexview, and my buddy just bought the HP Elitebook and there is no comparison, it's not even close. Nothing comes close to IPS. And the sad fact was that he _Had_ a T60 with Flexview but it was stolen......
-
I make my living using a workstation class T60p, doing 3D design, and using many other resource intensive scientific and design applications. I too, being focused on productivity have no time for gaming. (not that I wouldn't enjoy it). As the founder and CEO of an 18yr old company that deploys over 400 ThinkPads at any given time. In the decade since we switched to ThinkPads I could not be happier with the stability, speed, durability, and build quality. Personally I've upgraded every 10 to 12 months ever since the first T series was introduced. I routinely turn over the ThinkPads that my employees use every 18 months just to keep them in the most powerful models available. Thus my only point is with this much experience, and having no problems of any substance along the way with what is now well into the thousands of ThinkPads we have used, I can highly endorse these as the very best for your money.
Based on your requirements I would look at the new W series ThinkPads as they are released. They are intended to the replacement for the suffix "p" series ThinkPads. -
The HP claims outdoor viewing in the spec sheets. The W series Lenovo has outdoor viewing? The problem is price is probably way too costly. I take it the T60P equivalent is now the W?
I agree with you on the Flexview models. But the T400 is not Flexview. -
ThinkPad W500 15.4" widescreen with discrete graphics
The problem with W500 is not the price but rather its 15.4" and bigger than the 14.1" footprint I was looking for and I bet the weight is too heavy. -
I asked you above, where exactly? Show me these spec sheets where they claim that.
