I'm thinking about buying a T61P with the basic 1GB DDR and upgrade it with 2 X 2048 MB Kingston HyperX 2-2-2-14 ... Will it be okay ??

Those are really low timings. I think any RAM you buy sans the Lenovo website will be fine. I haven't heard of anyone having any issues. I just bought the G Skill (4GB) for my incoming T61p for about $90.
-
Are low timings good or bad? What do those timings represent?
-
RAM timings are measured in clock cycles, the lower the number, the faster your system is. There are four timings that are listed with the memory, they are in order:
CAS - clock cycles to reach the correct column of memory
RCD - cycles between RAS to CAS
RP - amount of cycles needed for reading
RAS - the smallest number of cycles a row must be actively accessed -
Frankly, I think you might as well go for 4Gb. RAM is cheap nowadays, anyway.
Ahhh.. I see. What's the best timings for a 2Gb 200-pin 667Mhz stick? -
I have never seen 2-2-2-14 in a set of DDR2 RAM before. Mostly I've seen stuff closer to 5-5-5-15.
Which brings me to another point - I note that in your original post you say "DDR." Be aware that the T61 accepts 200-pin DDR2 SODIMMs, and not 200-pin DDR SODIMMs. -
And make sure it's 667Mhz. You could buy 800MHz ones but you'll be wasting your money as it'll just downclock to 667Mhz.

correcto chubbs,
alber i believe you are mistaken. you are looking at desktop memory. kingston hyper x does not have laptop memory. when buying laptop memory just make sure (as everyone else stated) that it is SODIMM 200 pin 667 DDR2 memory.
unfortunately Gskill and Kingston are the only companies with even a 4-4-4 low latency. corsair used to have some fast laptop memory but that ended with DDR2. most will all perform the same for daily use.
here are some prices
Frys
Newegg

I'm sorry it's 4-4-4-12 :S but it's a better timing than the one from lenovo
-
No matter where you buy it, just make sure it's a 'branded' one, and NOT from the notebook manufacturers.
-
Look at the one I want to buy: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=29774
But I think I'm gonna go for the G.Skill with low timing. Many people bought them for their T61P on NBR and it seems to work well. Look: http://www.infonec.com/site/main.php?module=detail&id=353628<
P.S. I'm buy from this website because i'm in Canada. I can't buy from Newegg -
Wow. That's a HyperX for laptops.
Also do check for the warranty.
-
stand corrected. never saw that before.
yeah, thats what you need. kingston is an excellent company with great tech support. that should set your lenovo up nice. that is just as fast as any other mfg out there including the Gskill -
Will the Hyperx be better than the G.Skill ?? They have them same timings ..
-
Which is cheaper? Get that one.
-
I'm gonna go for the G.Skill
-
Well done!

Ordering my T61P today

All the best! And may your T61p arrive quickly!

Yeah, those timings did seem unusually low. A 'thank you' to all for pointing out that it was desktop and not laptop and other thing to be aware of (DDR, speeds, etc.).
My T61 has officially left China (hopefully no delays) and my memory will be here tomorrow. Nice.
Kingston HyperX + Lenovo T61P ... Is it ok ??
