I plan on installing a gig of kingston ram for my new X61. Is the "lenovo" specific ram really worth it? Its about 20 dollars more.

The normal RAM should do fine. The specific RAM is only there to make Kingston some extra money, because some will buy that type. The specific memory will also gurantee compatibility, whereas the normal memory can sometimes have problems, but the vast majority will work fine.

Kingston's "lenovo" specific ram.
