I am not happy with display of T43, it's very dull and pale looking. I have Compaq M2000 series 15.4" laptop, it beats down the t43 in display, even at full brightness t43 clearly looks dull and dark then Compaq which is running on three levels lower then full brightness. Will upload the pic to make a comparison,Can you plz suggest way out to brighten up the screen so that the viewing is lively and pleasant.
The config details are as follows:
    IBM ThinkPad T43 2668-CA2
    Pentium M 750 1.86 GHz, 2GB RAM, 60GB HDD, 14.1in 1400x1050 LCD, 64MB ATI Radeon X300
Compaq machine is running with ATIradeon Express 200M,512mb ram and AMD ML-32 1.6ghz CPU.

Compaq is on left and T43 to the right.

What could be the cost involved in replacement of the back light? Is it the worth to replace the LCD or backlight, considering it's a 4 yr old machine.

Sell it and buy something else. 4:3 ThinkPad screens are just dim compared to other notebooks. There's nothing you can do about it. You can use calibration software to correct colors, but the brightness you're stuck with.

So that means there is nothing wrong with back light as such,is it more of a generic sort of feature?I just bought this as a second hand machine.Would love to keep it for year at least.

The older Thinkpad screens (which happen to be the 4:3 screens) are inherently dimmer. There's no way to make them any brighter than they are. Note that the longer the screen has been used for, the dimmer the backlight will become (on CCFL screens - very little if any degradation on LED screens).

Also, the matte screen coating would make the screen appear "duller" in comparision to a glossy display (if your Compaq is glossy).
