I'd go for the W540, however the Dell m4800 and m3800 are solid options, also the upcoming Lenovo Ideapad Y50 might be a contender if you don't care about consumer class machines.

My question would be what OS are you accustomed to? If you've never used OS X before...I've had alot of long time Windows users go to OS X, and after a week they return the Mac cause they can't stand OS X.

If your Photoshop CS6 license is for OS X, get the Mac. If PC - W540. Simple as that IMO.

One OS X, you also can get Aperture for photo processing, in addition to Lightroom and Capture One.

Might wanna look into the Dell M4800; at least that one has eSata. Keyboards are both crappy.

Not sure what you're talking about, the W540 has an excellent keyboard, it's the trackpoint buttons that are subpar, but if OP is considering a MacBook in the first place, then that should not be a problem.

Inb4 i started the new vs old TP keyboard war.

Not really: they layout is still almost as crappy as the W530.

If you are looking at the Apple MacBook Pro Retina , you should be looking at the Dell Precision M3800 and not the Lenovo ThinkPad W540.

Lol, there is no war to be started. The new TP is just an abomination.

So much that the only Thinkpad in my house, after over 12+ years, is my work issued X230t.

I have bought a 13" rMBP and 15" rMBP. Returned my X240 FHD after being very disappointed with the TP and dead-silent (almost mushy) keyboard. It wasn't the Lenovo I've grown to love over the past decade +.

Not trying to start a Mac vs. Lenovo fight, but I'll just say that I don't miss the modernized Lenovo design. In fact, and it's really sad, I don't miss Lenovo at all. Not even the trackpoint. The glass Macbook trackpad is 100% amazing, and this is coming from someone who always disabled the Lenovo trackpad within 10 minutes of ownership.

As I've said before, I sure hope Lenovo's Japan design and engineering center knows what they are doing. And the offset keyboard on the W540 - holy you know what. No thanks x 1000.

Back to the OP's question: I'm sure you can guess, but I'd recommend a Macbook. Upgrade to 16gigs of RAM and at least a 512gig SSD and put Windows on Bootcamp if you absolutely need to. But OSX is a refreshing change in my experience. I still have Win8.1 on Bootcamp, but I find myself using OSX for 95% of my needs.

Your needs may be different, but I've finally found a better machine than my once fantastic Lenovos. It's a sad state of affairs, but hey, I'm happy.

I'm still on this forum because I still have a soft spot for Lenovos, and am secretly hoping they eventually realize their design changes are costing them customers (and they bring back what defined them to begin with). One can hope I guess.

if you want two drives for video/photo editing (and that is probably wise) then stick with a PC or be prepared to carry around an external drive with the rMBP. Dell M3800 would be a similar size to a 15" MBP with options for mSATA and regular 2.5" drives.
