I really just dont know whether someone has brought up this issue before or not.
I red an article about Apple customer rage about how their screen is not showing "millions of colors" as being advertised by Apple but instead only shows 262 thousand colors. The complete story can be found here:
http://www.appledefects.com/?p=283
Basically they tried to find manufacturer of the LCD and search the detail specification in the manufacturer's home page. And the site stated that the specific LCD only able to show 262.000 colors, not millions of colors. Hardware-wise, their LCD cannot display the millions, but thanks to software rendering of the OS, it make as if the screen capable showing millions. Of course this is not as good as if the screen have the hardware capability of showing the "millions" natively.
I get bored and decide to do simple research. I tried to do similar path but with different program. I use PC Wizard, which is very light and do not need to be installed on the system. You just have to run its .exe file. You can download its self-extractor file here :
http://www.cpuid.org/download/pcw2007_v173.exe
So after extracting the files in a folder i run the program.
It recognize my screen and show the manufacturer's code : LP154W02-TL06. Later i found that i only have to use the first 8 characters, that is, only LP154W02, to categorized the type of the LCD.
Mind you, this LCD is the same with any other thinkpad that came with part number 13N7020, that is : LG-Philips WSXGA+ 15,4" 200 nits.
Googling around i finally found the page that show the detail specification of the LCD screen.
http://www.lgphilips-lcd.com/homeContain/jsp/eng/prd/prd301_j_e.jsp
Here is the result :

The specs show EXACTLY only capable of showing 262.000 colors. Not millions of colors. I am not into programming or something, but this site : http://www.colorblindmac.com/, which is the official site of the Apple rage customer, said that they have deceived them by providing mediocre screen.
Moreover, the brightness only 185 nits- not 200 nits as being specified in the Thinkpad hardware maintenance manual.
Are they (Lenovo) try to deceive us too? Well, I have not recalled whether they advertised the Thinkpad as having "millions of colors" screen, and surely thinkpad is mostly toward business line and not designer line like Apple. But honestly, do you feel that Lenovo have the obligation to state their LCD capability to us?
Or they just ignore it because, maybe - just maybe - most vendors are doing the same : choose low-colors capability screen to decrease the cost? This LG-Philips LCD already have steep price, one site put USD 370 price tag on it.
If you have time and can do the simple research above, could you please state the spec of your screen? I wonder if there is any thinkpad out there that can show millions of colors hardware wise. Maybe it will in the reserve edition??

Most if not all notebook screens have 6-bit panels. You need to get into the expensive "professional" panels before you get 8 bit color.
LG Philips screen only able to show 262.000 colors, and not millions!
