Lenovo just released BIOS 1.24 for the W510

    [Problem fixes]
    - Fix an issue where an invalid password error is encountered when attempting to use a supervisor password as a current password while a user logons BIOS setup with a supervisor password.
    - Fix an issue where usable memory is displayed under 3GB on 64bit OS even 4GB or more memory installed.
    - Fix an issue that a USB device is not recognized by Windows connecting to the Alway On USB enabled port.

Bad news... I installed it under Windows instead of the bootable ISO and now I'm waiting for a new mainboard because the flashing under Windows must have messed something up. Only reason I did so under Windows was because the previous one went fine... yeah, I know I shouldn't have regardless, but I guess you don't learn until you get burned =(

Can someone explain to me why updating BIOS is always better to do via bootable CDs rather than through windows ??

Well the simple answer would be "less chance of the need for a system board replacement." ;)

But I always install without making a CD.

I think the actual reason is so Windows doesn't attempt to use resources it shouldn't, during the install.

I think it's better to avoid additional risk that comes from windows if it was unstable. I did BIOS update on my VAIO last time from Windows and I had to replace they replaced the motherboard because of that. I got the blue screen while doing the upgrade! This time on the Thinkpad I did it using the bootable CD.

I did the update on my T510, it solved the RAM problem (2.99GB out of 4 GB). I think this is the same bug on both T and W.

So how many of you W510 owners actually updated the BIOS ?? did you go smooth without any hiccups?

Im afraid to do it, but i also want to fix the known bugs badly!! :( :(

I didn't update (still at 1.17) because I don't think I'm affected by any issues right now.

If you burn the CD, verify it and follow all instructions carefully, you should be fine though.

I tend to prefer the CD method because the resultant environment where this critical task is being done is far less complex, but this CD also exists because not all the world runs Windows. Thankfully, Lenovo is one of the few manufacturers who still has a clue and does not force you to install Windows simply to update the BIOS. Thanks Lenovo!
