Thinkpad zt (14" diagonal) is on sale now.

    A 1.73GHz Pentium M 740, with 512MB RAM,
80GB harddisk and DVDRW is for a mere
    $1999.

Granted IBM has better quality...but that compares
to around $1100-1200 in comparable dv1000.

    What am I missing?

The ZT yeah costs a lot more and I don't think the better quality it gives is worth that much money. I'd just go with the DV1000, more bang for your buck.

Well, the z60t is also a pound lighter. But yeah, all ThinkPads are pretty expensive compared to Dell's and HP's.

One of the things that caught my attention was that there is only a 1 year warranty, unlike the other models, like the T43, that comes with a 3 year warranty. If the build quality is comparable, then lowering the warranty period is not a way to convey that.

that warranty downgrade is kind of odd. The z60m (15.4") is going to be cheaper starting than the Z60t. The Z60t hard drive protection, security and recovery software is going to be light years ahead of what you get with the dv1000 and of better build quality too. Does the price justify paying that much more? Well, that's a personal decision.

In the "Features" tab of the Z-series section it says that these can be equipped with ATI mobility radeon x300 and x700s, but I cannot find any models that have them - all the models seem to have just the integrated Intel graphics only!

Also, has the lag time for getting a thinkpad always been 2-4 weeks? Or did this happen when Lenovo took over?

When I ordered my X41 tablet it was supposed to ship in under two weeks. I received it almost 6 weeks later! From what I have read (and experienced) since Lenovo took over customer service, lead times, and even shipping have gone south. Lenovo is having all sorts of issues with customs. My T41 sat in customs for a week before it arrived. My experiences seem to be somewhat typical as of late. So if the Z says 2-4 weeks don't count on it anytime soon.

I ordered a customized T43 at the end of August this summer, and they said that I would receive it 4 weeks later... However, I ended up getting it within 2 weeks (I think it was a little over a week actually), so I certainly had a good experience with buying from Lenovo.

The T43 is an established model that hasn't changed much in three years. The Z models are brand new as well as the X41T...so far Lenovo has shown they are not capable of meeting demand. Check out the link below for some examples:
