I frequently see threads about batteries on this forum and the most frequently asked question seems to be:

    - How much battery life can one expect for a particular model and battery size/type.

In addition I often see misinformation about the capacity of the battery. For instance a common misconception is that the biggest battery for the X60/X61 (8-cell) or X200/X201 Tablet (8-cell) is a 9 cell battery just like the X200/X201.

I also see questions about the correct battery FRU/part no from time to time.

Last but not least there is often confusion about the different battery options available, i.e. 4-cell, 6-cell, 9-cell and Ultrabay battery for a T400.

The following link on Lenovo.com should answer all of the questions above. It provides a good overview and gives you good estimates of battery life. One should take the battery life numbers with a pinch of salt, as they may not be stressing the machines as much as people do in real life. However as one must assume lenovo uses the same testing criteria for all ThinkPads, the battery life information provides good internal comparison for all the different models.

Here's the link: Lenovo - Battery finder

Edit: Compatible Power adapters are also shown, ranging from 65W to a whopping 230W for the W701.

Thanks for the link. But strangely, I can't seem to find the FRU number of my battery in that list. I looked under the R400 section. My battery's FRU number is: 42T4677. Am I looking at the wrong place?

I got my machine's battery FRU from Power Manager.

There are many alternative part numbers for the same compatible battery - often up to 5-6 different ones.

While I am not 100% sure, I believe the numbers they show on the page reflect the latest number/part revision, which is also the one which will show up when ordering directly from Lenovo.

don't confuse marketing (retail) part numbers with FRU (field replacement unit) part numbers.   parts can have one part number and multiple FRU numbers.

what's shown on the battery finder page are marketing part numbers.

Google is your friend... which will reveal that your battery (42T4677) is a 6-cell battery.

Hence it is equivalent to this: ThinkPad Battery 33+ (41U3198)

So according to Lenovo a brand new battery can last up to 5 hours.

On the battery finder page you can click on the names of the different compatible batteries, which will take you to the product page page for the particular battery. Here you will see i.e. the number of cells, compatibility and pricing.

Lenovo - Find accessories for your laptop and desktop - Batteries & Power 41U3198

@jabbajabba....thanks. Actually, I already knew that my battery was a 6 cell. I thought the FRU numbers would be on that list. But as erik explained, that is not really the case.

    Cheers!

I remember my first few cycles on my x200 6-cell. It literally lasted 7 hours. Ridiculous.

Down to about 3 hrs now.

NN = number assigned to a particular battery series.

no + indicates a slim/compact battery (3 or 4 cells), slice battery, or ultrabay battery.
+ indicates a medium size battery (6 cells).
++ indicates a large size battery (8 or 9 cells).

I was looking at the massive 230W power adapter requirement for the W701.

Does anyone have a comparison picture of the 230W adapter vs. i.e. the 90W or 65W adapter? Lead org perhaps?

Are there really none of the W701 owners who also have a T or X series who can show a side by side comparison picture of the adapters?

Sorry don't have the 230W adapters on hand for a comparison. This adapter is only usable on the W7xx machines, and is not compatible with other thinkpads.

Lead org: With a W701 you'll have a large platform for stacking your ThinkPads :)

Still no W701 owner who can post a picture comparing a 230W adapter with a 90W or 65W? Last call before I go hunting for W701 threads to identify owner prospects.

Well, my 2-year old 6-cell battery just degraded to 25% of its initial capacity. It sucks somehow...
Here it is! 230W vs 90W

According to that page, the battery for the T410s ranges from 3-8.5 hours of battery life.

I sure wish I knew the model, config and conditions for the 8.5 hours. 5.5 hours for that matter.

At the bottom of the page is a link to the battery tests they run but it doesn't look like it's been updated in 5 years.

I can get somewhere between 5 and 7 hours out of my R400 9cell battery depending on how frequently I load pages and what is screen brightness. Thats about web pages. Havent tried to do some heavier tests.

Yes that is a shame. Otherwise it would be great if a 230W adapter could charge i.e. the X200 several times faster than the 65W adapter :D
