So i'm pretty much torn apart between these two laptops-however I don't plan on dishing out a lot of cash, so core duo and all that jazz is pretty much out of the window. On lenovo's site, they offer these specs for the two lappies:

    C100
    15" XGA, 1024X768
    1.5 GHz Celeron M 370 (400 MHz FSB)
    Windows XP Home Edition
    40 gig HD space
    256 mb RAM
    CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive
802.11 a/b/g wireless (the lenovo version, not the intel one)
    8 cell Li-Ion Battery
    4USB, 1 Firewire, VGA and S-Video, 3 in 1 Multimedia Reader, PCMCIA
    Weight is 6.2 lbs

    Price: 599.00 (subtract 100 because of rebate)= 499.00

    N100
    14" WXGA, 1280X800
    1.6 GHz Celeron M 420 (533 Mhz FSB)
    Windows XP Home Edition
    80 gig HD space
    512 RAM
    CD-RW/DVD-ROM Drive
802.11 a/b/g Lenovo wireless (same as above)
    6-cell Li-Ion Battery
    4USB, Firewire, VGA,S-Video, 4 in 1 multicard reader, PCMCIA
    Weight is 5.6 lbs.

Price: 699.00 (subtract another 100 because of rebate) = 599.00

The bolded specs are the ones that are the better (at least for my purposes) for me.

So it appears that the N100 is the clear winner in terms of the specs, but I want that LONG battery life than the C100 can provide (although I haven't heard much about the battery longevity on the N100, equiped with a Celeron)
and the price tag on the C100 is pretty nice. The FSB on the N100 is quicker-although how much of a difference will that make? However, is there anything else I should consider?

By the way, I'm going to be a college student that's pretty much going to be on productivity central...So no gaming-however a reasonable amt of multitasking and typing-hence why i was leaning towards the lenovos in the first place. Anyways, any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

my understanding of the celeron is that it is a cheaper variant of the pentium m that doesnt have the pentium m power saving features. i reccomend checking out turion processors for cost effective power consciousness... at least look.

you will probably notice a pretty big difference in battery life with that 8 cell battery, but then again, its all up in the air... there are a lot of factors.

for one thing, with more ram, the n100 wont have to access the hard drive as much, and therefore will be noticeably faster and require less power. The n100 will also need less power to light up the smaller screen.

also, im personally a fan of mobility, the smaller screen, and widescreen.

I believe you will appreciate the larger hardrive, the lighter weight, the increased processing power and ram and resolution of the n100, and 2 cells of battery might not make much a difference in this case.

I agree with Masterchef - despite the 8-cell and the $100 savings, the C100 cannot touch the N100 here. You would probably find yourself upgrading the RAM on the C100 right away, so it's not quite $100 difference anyhow.

Just remember that the step up to the 699-100 C100 laptop upgrades you to 512MB ram, 80gig HD, WinXP Pro (not home), and you get the larger screen with excellent battery life.

For me when I played with the N100 in store at office depot, it didn't feel as sturdy as the C100. Yes they are both plasticy and whatnot, but the C100 just feels better built overall.

Both laptops are going to be in the same performance range. Both will be able to play downloaded movies great (GMA 900 and 950).

The only key areas I see where there might be a noticeable difference is screen size, and platform. The C100 is PATA HD based, so cheaper upgrade drives right now, and more selection. The N100 is SATA based with higher prices and lower selection, but gaining market. Both are pretty much equal performance, with the current drives coming nowhere near maxing out the slowest interfaces yet.

Well, if I pay 150 more on the C100, I can get WinXP Professional, 512 mb RAM, and a 80 gig hd.

OR, if I pay 100 more on the C100, I can get a dvd-burner drive, 512 mb ram, and 80 gigs on the hd.

These are the upgrade options for the C100-any opinions to that?

Arrg I'm so stuck in between the two: C100 has a larger screen, longer battery life, the dvd-burner (If i spend 100 more to match the N100), and perhaps better build than the N100...while the N100 has faster FSB, widescreen, and is more lightweight than the C100. Man-this is tough. shoot. haha.
