I figured that we could just have a mega-thread about all of the Lenovo/Thinkpad information that will be released starting tomorrow morning at CES 2012.

If the IdeaPad ultrabooks actually start with a reasonable configuration at the base $699, it wouldn't actually be an unreasonable choice anymore, especially with Lenovo's frequent ecoupons. Overall, nice showing from Lenovo. Wonder if there's more to come in the Thinkpad line during CES itself.

According to the @Lenovo twitter account, no. The only ThinkPad announcements are the X1 hybrid and the T430u.

This year's CES is a bust for traditional PCs and laptops with Ivy Bridge only coming out in a couple of months.

It wasn't exactly fun last year, when many notebooks announced at CES came out only a few months later and were not available right away. Lenovo I think did not even announce the T/X/W series goodies until later (post-CES). This year, they might announce early, but you still have to wait a crazy amount of time.

Take the T430u for example, half a year of waiting? Why announce a product so early?

Marketing. If you're in the market for a new laptop, reading this you might postpone your purchase. Personally I find premature announcements to be an annoyance.

Why is it good if I postpone my purchase? Wouldn't it make more sense (purely from a marketing perspectice) to convince me to buy something NOW, and then convince me to upgrade in half a year?

But yes, annoying it is :)

Here's a handy dandy list of everything they've announced:

    Lenovo U300e
    Lenovo IdeaPad U310
    Lenovo IdeaPad U410
    Lenovo IdeaPad Y480
    Lenovo IdeaPad Y580
    Lenovo S200
    Lenovo S206
    Lenovo G480
    Lenovo G580
    Lenovo G780
    Lenovo Z480
    Lenovo Z580
    Lenovo Z380
    Lenovo ThinkPad T430u
    Lenovo ThinkPad S430
    Lenovo ThinkPad E430
    Lenovo ThinkPad E435
    Lenovo ThinkPad E530
    Lenovo ThinkPad E535
    Lenovo ThinkPad E130
    Lenovo ThinkPad E330
    Lenovo B480
    Lenovo B580

That's 23 laptops, I'm not including tablets or other things. And I can understand why they'll hold off on the ThinkPads, it's too much to even digest that list in a couple of days. I think the popular ones from this list will be the U310/U410 because the price is right for an ultrabook, even though they're too heavy to be ultrabooks really. The E430 and Y480 will also be popular, simply because the predecessor E420 and Y470 were. And the IdeaPad S430 also looks very interesting.

Lenovo is definitely stepping up their game, I think they'll end up having one of the strongest showings among PC makers at CES.

Well, if you bought from a competitor they wouldn't make any sale at all so they throw out premature product announcements to keep you interested.

Well, it's good for Lenovo if you postpone your purchase if you don't like the other brands offerings. Atleast you'll know what will be available from Lenovo for sure in the near future.

I'm looking forward to throwing my money at Lenovo for an Edge S430, or possibly a T430u if it gets Thunderbolt and an option for 1600x900.

edit: hmmm... a video of the T430u with a Lenovo rep makes no mention of 1600x900, and only refers to DisplayPort -- not Thunderbolt. I guess it's S430 for me then.

The Verge accidentally posted information about the coming Samsung Series 9 Gen 2 machines early. It's now been pulled but Samsung will be announcing their stuff in a couple of hours. 1600x900 is on tap according to the Verge post.

    Competition is good.

Yeah If the Samsung Series 9 Gen 2 has a HD+ Screen that thing would be sick.

From the photos of it on CNET it looks like a HD+ screen in the picture of Dan Ackerman using it.

Good to see the smaller footprint and the higher resolution, hopefully other manufacturers will take note.

I'd totally be all over the 15" version if it had a FHD screen but it sounds like it also has the same HD+ screen.

WOW! Give me that with a Thinkpad keyboard (X1 or standard) + trackpoint and I'd be all over it. Small footprint, thin, great display size and quality, I hope Lenovo's paying attention.

Best of all would be a Macbook Air + Thinkpad keyboard + trackpoint, but that's just a dream.

Not sure, but in any case, I think the difference now is that the software and hardware have both matured. While past Windows versions have treated touch as a side gimmick, touch will play a large role in Windows 8. IPS displays and accurate, responsive multitouch technology are more common. And so, such a device actually has commercial potential.

The new Hp Envy 14 Spectre has mini DP, HDMI, 1600x900 Radiance screen... no Thunderbolt and no Ivy Bridge, though. A rather slow Sandy Bridge ULV only. So I hope the T430 will beat that... whenever it comes. Might be a couple months off, still.

I'm not so sure about that... the mini-DP port on the Envy 14 Spectre seems to have the same logo as the Edge S430, which of course has Thunderbolt:

I'm a huge fan of this tablet if it works as good as it looks.

13.3". Small form-factor. Ivy Bridge. Windows 8. SSD. 8 Hours battery life. and 1600x900 resolution.

Make a Thinkpad-esque version of this and I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Here's the last proper ThinkPad, lol, 10-year old IBM R40 running the latest version of Ubuntu - Oneiric Ocelot. :p

Seriously though, I think we are yet to see proper ThinkPads when Ivy is official. I'm thinking a X230 with 13.1" 1600x900 Matte IPS...

Yes, the keyboard is disabled when the screen opens past the 180 degree mark. What impresses me is that they included a 1600x900 13.3" multi-touch screen!

I also saw during a couple of demos that when the unit is in tablet mode (completely folded) that it can be laid down on a table without damaging the keys because the keyboard is recessed, there is a double coating of lettering paint on the keys, and the surface around the keyboard is soft.

I can't believe I missed this tablet in my trawling of engadget for CES news.

This thing sounds perfect and can almost directly compete with tablets on specification (it is going to have an Ivy Bridge CPU but the screen doesn't have as high resolution as some of the newer tablets while battery life is suppose to be good considering it is a laptop with the bonus of a [I hope] full blown Windows install [I am sure you will be able to install Linux on it]) and price (they are saying it is built to ultrabook specifications so price should be around the $1000 mark making it an expensive tablet or a well specced laptop with a good touch screen and flexible design).

I personally am looking forward to this but I think it is coming to come out too late for me so I will need to purchase a tablet in the mean time and get this later on when it's released (assuming someone else doesn't release something similar).

    Probably similar to the X220....

    i.e. X40, X41 -> X60, X61 -> X200, X201 -> X220

But Lenovo may surprise us all with a total revamp.

Maybe i will see what is going down when i visit HQ in Feb.

How about the Y480/Y580? People talking about the GTX 660m saying it will be around the 6990m's performance, and the GT 650m being around 10k 3dmark vantage as well...

I wonder would if they are going to upgrade the X1 to X2 this year if they already have the X1 hybrid. Guess it might be just some spec boost or Lenovo might just ignore it like they did with the X301. I hope we get at least a processor upgrade and a decent screen upgrade. Hopefully they will use the IPS panel from the Yoga on the X1 hybrid or X2
