Can someone elaborate on exactly what are the differences? I've googled and its just hard to see the differences.

From what I've gathered so far the E420s has a better hinge (metal) as to plastic of the E420 and it has a backlit keyboard as well as a built in battery (non removable battery)?

Also does the E420s have a better all around material? From the Lenovo's website, when you choose the E420s the picture of the laptop actually looks darker as well. Oh and the E420s seems to have some type of glass over the display?

I'm thinking about ordering the E420 over the E420s model just for the replaceable battery and the antiglare display (no glass).

The E420 is definitely heavier at 5.22lbs for the 6 cell battery over the ~4.14lb E420s, but the screen should be about the same, if I'm not mistaken.

The E420 offers a matte screen. E420s is glossy only.

I'm going to get the E420 due to the anti glare screen and removable battery.

Does the E420 have a thinklight?

no the e420 wont sport a thinklight.

    basically here are the differences:

    e420s

*glossy screen (infinity display, basically a slab of glass/plastic over the screen, mac like)

    *thinner

*non removable battery (its inside and kind of tricky to get there, probably you can do it, but not on the go)

*possible or reality AMD 6630m gpu

*Metal chassis (magnesium aluminum alloy), I think the e420 is basically plastic.

    *Thinklight

    e420

    *matte screen

*Can hold usual fare 2.5'' drives (with the 9.5mm height, the e420s can only use the 7mm height ones)

The slbook seem to indicate the E420 have a better screen than the E420s. It has the contrast ratio for the E420 as 500:1, while the E420s had a screen of 300:1, meh.

That is correct. I just got an E420 and it arrived yesterday.

I was rather disappointed (and annoyed) to find the computer all plastic. The picture of the E420 on Lenovo's website shows the E420 with metal hinges, not plastic ones. Durability is the no. 1 thing I was looking for. I'll likely send it back.

Really? And eat the the 15% restocking fee? I wanted to return my e420s but the damn restocking makes it a tough pill to swallow.

They show a picture of a laptop w/ metal hinges as an "E420" and the comparison b/t the 420 and 420S makes no mention of structural differences. I have no question under those circumstances they'll eat the waive the fee. Frankly I think they ought to give me the laptop in the picture w/ the specs I ordered at no additional charge. We'll see.

Hinges are painted black. They are available in silver also. Check the service / repair manual.
