So I got an email from Lenovo saying it is time for their Employee Pricing Event. It turns out their prices are much worse than the normal deals us consumers get. The discounts on the Y410P are from $250-280 whereas the coupon codes available previously let us get $450-500 off. I wonder if Lenovo is just lying to us about this being "employee pricing" or if the employees really get screwed this badly.

It's all about psychology... Today, prices are already set high enough to be able offering "Big savings". There are "coupons" available almost all the time. If there isn't, one usually tends to take an offer made either by a reseller of said product or reconsider buying another product/brand. So it's not about offering "savings", but to get you into believing "Hey, I can totally save some money".

Employees are more likely to believe they get the "best deal", because they work there. So they usually wont question these events as much as normal customers would ;>

How do you know the "employee pricing event" is the real employee price when you don't even work there...?

It is called advertisement for a reason.

I just ignore sales prices and just straight-up haggle with Lenovo, or any other company I deal with. Much more effective, and it's harder to screw the customer that way.

Got my Y410P (1600x900, SSD) for $800 bucks, a real steal, bought it when it was cheap and used an additional coupon to slash the price.

And Lenovo has sales 24/7, so they arent really sales, but for $800 Y410p is a pretty sweet laptop.

Exactly. They are charging $999 after a $249.80 "employee discount" for the 1366x768 model.
