Can someone please explain the difference between the G-series and the Y-series?
I know one is for home use and the other is loaded for multimedia use, but can someone explain the difference in weight, build quality etc.? I was checking two identical configurations in the G-series and Y-series and they seem to be almost $200 apart.
Could someone help me understand the difference in price?

The G series is a more of a "cheap" line. Most models have older processors and lower end parts. Great line for people who need a basic laptop. The Y series pack a much stronger punch with the latest CPU's and GPU's and are more flashier. I can't comment on the build quality and weight, but I would assume they would be roughly the same.

G series is the basic no frill line of consumer laptops, the Y series is the mainstream consumer laptop.

Weight is about the same, quality would be better on the Y series. G series lack digital video outputs like HDMI or DVI port.

As the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

Thanks guys! That was really helpful!!

I am planning to use the computer just for school work and at most something like a movie, which would be barely once a month. Considering that, would you suggest that the G460 is a better bet for me or is it worth spending the extra ~$150 on the Y460?

why don't you get a R400 or T400 from the outlet.lenovo.com? the i3 CPU is pretty much the same as the P8xxx in terms of overall speed.

A R400 Thinkpad can be had for around 500 dollars, which sure beats any of these consumer laptops in terms of overall value, qaulity and weight.

If you want twin video output, then get the T500, which has the displayport and vga out (15.4 inch though).

If you need more video grunt, get a DIY Vidock.

One thing you have to take into consideration, the speaker on the y-series are JBL, people who have the Y series love those.

speakers are better, but the hinge longevity is questionable over long period of use. Obviously, the consumer line of the ideapad is aimed at multimedia use, so it would have more features that enhances the multimedia experience.
