    Hiya -

I have a G530 that I got about 18 months ago. It came with Vista. I upgraded to Windows 7 in October. Since then, the brightness buttons no longer work (FN + F10 and F11). The other FN F+ buttons work fine...I can adjust volume, sleep, work the home key, etc. I am really tired of this brightness...it really makes my eyes hurt.

I tried hunting around the Control Panel, and using the help feature. It told me to go to the Power Option panel and manually change it. It also said if I didn't have the option, to go to the Lenovo site and update the driver. Since I didn't have the option, I did this and the site told me that the driver is up to date.

I've hunted around and troubleshooted this a few different ways, to no avail. I'm not a complete idiot, but at this point I need help. I just want to dim the stupid screen. I don't even care if I get the FN buttons to work at this point; I doubt I'll toggle the brightness often. But I do need to lower this brightness. Suggestions? [Kevin O...tried to figure out how to send you a message, but it didn't make sense to download AIM just for this... :) ]

I did a little searching on this one. There are two things worth trying.

First, you could try downloading and installing ThinkVantage System Update, from this link.

Lenovo Support - ThinkVantage System Update

This by itself won't help you, but as it can help you get updates from Lenovo, they may help. The two important updates you will likely need are a BIOS update, and an update for your video drivers. Using this utility should allow you to select them so they will download and install automatically, the easiest method.

If this does not work, you will probably need to download the BIOS and video drivers manually. I'm assuming your system has Intel graphics. W can get you links to the best drivers for your system, but you haven't mentioned whether your upgrade to Windows 7 is 64-bit or 32-bit; it would be helpful to know. It would also be good for us to know if your laptop is using Intel or nVidia graphics. If you're not sure how to tell, we can provide you with steps to check on that as well.
