I just picked up a Lenovo G550, w/the 2.2 GHz Single Core Celeron 900, 3 Gb DDR3 memory, Windows 7 Home Premium (x32), on sale at Fry's, for $329.00. I bought it for my nephew, who's heading off to college this Fall.

For the price, it's not that bad. Everything is easy to get to, including the CPU. I wish other manufacturers products were as upgrade friendly.

While it comes w/just the 2.2 GHz, 800 MHz FSB Celeron 900, Socket P, Single Core CPU, it should be upgradeable to at least the optional 2.2 GHz, 800 MHz FSB T4400 (1 Mb L2) or T6600 (2 Mb L2) Socket P Dual Cores that's also available for the G550.

With that said, is there any reason why I couldn't put in say a 2.6 GHz, 800 MHz x7800 (4 Mb L2), which I can get real cheap, or a 2.6 GHz T9500 (6 Mb L2) Socket P, especially when it comes to the BIOS seeing it?

    Thx

maybe the cost of going to the T9xxx would be more than what the laptop is worth. A second hand T9xxx CPU costs like 200 USD or something on ebay when i last checked, and the laptop is worth only 329 dollars.

For everyday use a T4400 or T6600 should be more than enough.

I've seen a 2.4 GHz, 3 Mb L2 T8300 available for a good price, but I'll probably go w/a T6600/T6670. I want at least a Duo Core in it in any case.

My real point was, would the T9300 work in it?

    Thx.

theoretically it should, but there is no 100% guarantee on this. i have never seen the T9300 option on the G550, i am not sure whether lenovo ever tested the laptop to this cpu.

    Thank you :)

    I'll search on ebay for a T6600 or T6670.
