Last week Lenovo had the graphics for the T420 listed as NVIDIA N12P-GV now it shows NVIDIA NVS 4200M.

    Are they the same thing?

    Thanks!

NVS 4200M rolls off the tongue. :D

I swore after the Dell D820 I would never buy a NVS based machine again. Is the NVS 4200M worth a crap?

The NVS 4200M is a business graphics card. You're not going to be playing games on it and I don't think it's worth the $250 to upgrade to the NVS 4200M for business graphics. It's not that the NVS 4200M is bad, it's just that the integrated Intel HD3000 is that good.

Yes, the Nvidia NVS Quadro 4200M is the same as the N12P-GV. The latter is Nvidia's family code, and N12 refers to the GeForce 5xx family. The N12P subfamily refers to the 550M, 540M, 525M and 520M GPUs. The final -GV code refers to the 520M core, which is what the NVS 4200M essentially is.

Also, as a note, please leave the GPU bashing out of this thread, as it has nothing to do with the OP. There are plenty of other discussions of the merits of the latest Thinkpad GPUs--further OT posts will be deleted.

so you're saying that I should stop playing games with my NVS .. cought ..140m ? Because I have no problems doing that, and the NVS 4200 is much better than mine.

I've read somewhere that NVS4200 is based on the same core as the 520m as MidnightSun said, but that it's no where as powerful as a 520m. The former's bandwith is half that of the latter.
