When did you guys order? What config did you get? I ordered a Y400 on Monday and it shipped today, git the confirmation email tonight. UPS's site shows it on its way to me already.

Wow, that is really weird. Which Model did you get? I think the compnents are largely the same between the the Y500s and the Y400s, save for the obvious differences related to size.

It looked like the y580 were pushed way back (it said over 4 weeks to ship, I assume they are short of 660Ms) but that shouldn't really affect the Y500.

It did put an estimated ship date of the 18th when I ordered mine. Maybe I got lucky and someone canelled an order before it shipped and I got that one?

haha maybe so? but i ordered the y500 and i talked to a sales rep and he said that it was because they didnt have enough in their warehouse and needed to straight up produce new ones. so i guess thats why mine keeps getting delayed..

This is just ridiculous, I ordered my y500 sli on the 22nd and it's been delayed again, this is the 3rd time it's been delayed, I called in after the 2nd time and they offered me $50 if I don't cancel my order. I had to postpone my trip/change airline tickets because noone would be home to pick up the order and they assured me it would be in my hands next week. Should I keep playing this waiting game if they offer me more money?

At this point im sick of waiting and want a new laptop already, What are my alternatives for an equivalent laptop with the same graphic power/ weight/1080P screen? How does the 660m compare? I was looking at the Asus GW46

First, my suggestion is to be careful with lenovo cancellation, they may still ship your order, so before ordering another computer you should be super-sure that the order isn't going to ship (otherwise there can be 15% of shipping fees). I'm also looking for other laptops while I wait for the Y500... a very good laptop that is in some ways superior than the y500 is the y580 and you can find one of these from other, much faster resellers (maybe you can still find some model in computer stores too?).

So will the y400 support SLI and will it get a higher resolution screen?

Ordered my Y400 December 1st got it the 7th. I must say its very nice.

For those that are wondering it does have a backlit keyboard with 2 settings for the brightness of it.

As far as having optimus i dont think it does? Im not sure really but if it doesnt thats great because right now im running on battery and just doing normal web browsing stuff and downloading some things and it says its estimated at 5hours left at 90% battery. This is at 60% brightness which is bright enough for me.

As for SLI im certain that both the y400 and 500 support sli not just the 500 otherwise i would have gotten the Y500 but i didnt want a big laptop or numpad so i went with the 400. I can only hope we get a higher res screen i think 1600x900 would be perfect for this 14" 1080p would be a bit too big on 14" imho.

Oh and typing on this chiclet is a joy xD

EDIT: battery at 89% says it has 5hrs 42 mins of juice left i dont know how that happened or how accurate it is but im going to drain the battery to 0% today and let it calibrate and maybe get some better readings.

Anyone with a Y400 or 500 even for that matter can you please see if your laptop is making a decently high pitched whine sound? I can hear it even from 2-3 feet away if not more when my surroundings are completely silent. Its much easier to hear if you flip the laptop over and and put your ear to the big vent. The optical drive has a very low whine sound coming from it and is much harder to hear i probably wouldnt hear it with normal use but the side that has the fan is where im hearing a lot more noise.

It makes like a skipping sound too my guess is its the needle on the hard drive moving around but would the HDD really be making that much damn noise? especially when the laptop is just idling? Or perhaps its a totally different problem

I also have this noise (Y500). I am pretty sure it comes from the HDD. You can avoid it if you go to Energy Management and choose Balanced or Power Saver instead of Performance.

Edit: I have Wi-Fi problems. After each 40 min my Wi-Fi disconnects. Should I download a new driver?

Dang I've ordered a y480 and the y400 is now the same price (for same specs). I'd be fine with running a cooling pad if I could upgrade to 650m SLI later. Should I cancel the order on the y480 for the y400? ( my y480 won't ship for a couple more days)

The y400 has a free mSATA slot too right? (already bought a Crucial 256GB mSATA SSD)

Hmm i'll try those power options and see if it helps.

Yes i would advise that you cancel the y480 and go with the y400. The 400 does indeed have an mSATA slot mine came with 16gb which is more or less useless but I will eventually just take out the 1tb hdd and put in a normal ssd instead of mSATA cause they tend to be significantly slower, though still much faster than a hard drive.

I'm currently having some issues with getting Windows 7 to work with the W8 drivers. I couldnt stand using W8 that came preinstalled on the laptop so i formatted and put W7 ultimate x64 on it and that worked fine its up and running im just having issues getting wireless to work right now. All the Lenovo drivers say W8 32/64bit but W8 drivers are supposed to be compatible with W7 for the most part. I would have to have to use W8 over W7 because i cant get wireless connectivity to work which is kind of a big deal....

What wireless cards installed on your y400/y500? Is it the default b/g/n broadcom card or the intel centrino 2200?

Easiest way to do it is to just reinstall windows onto the SSD when you get it.

The wireless card thats installed on my Y400 is a Centrino Wireless-N 2230

I just reinstalled Windows 8 back onto the machine and it automatically had the wireless working so no driver was even needed. Odd.

EDIT: The drivers are out of date though. Driver Genius found the newer ones.

Time to clear this up once and for all. Owners of y400 and y500 regular without the SLI,

If you go to device manager under display adapter, does it list both intel hd 4000 and nvidia geforce card or no?

Can any Y500 owner try to right click desktop, go to nvidia setting, and in one of the tab (forgot what is the tab), and there is a drop down list with 3 options (If not mistaken, should "nvidia 650 single", "sli", "cpu"), try to choose the cpu, and use it on battery, see how long can it last.
I went to pc fair and try it out, I guess the option "CPU" should be the Intel HD 4000.
    Thanks you very much.

It does not change anything if you go to "CPU". I do not know for what this option is. The battery life Is not the best with 2-3 hours but I do not need more :)
The fan is silent, but the HDD makes some noise. But the build quality is absolutely amazing compared to Dell, Sony... I would recommend this laptop.

Sorry if this was mentioned before, but do all the y400 models on the lenovo sight right now support sli through the ultrabay? I just purchased the most base model at 749+tax and was simply wondering if this specific model has ultrabay capabilities incase i wanted to add an extra battery, gpu, fan etc.

    -Delayed until Dec 4th
    -Delayed again until 7th
    -Delayed AGAIN until 10th
    -Delayed AGAIN! until 14th.....

I called after the 2nd delay and was offered $50 and assured me it will be shipped on time....

Had to change airline date or noone would be home to receive the order costing me $$$

Gonna call them again tomorrow for more money or I cancel my order and get an ultrabook with thunderport and eGPU
Just furious with them right now, I never had this problem with HP,Dell or Asus

My order finally seems to have shipped, here my considerations regarding this crap:

    1) Lenovo support has zero communication with lenovo production
    2) I suspect that the second time my order was delayed because my bank didn't allowed them to take money from my credit card (security precautions). They don't tell you, I discovered this by chance (couldn't buy coffee with cc). I removed the hold from the cc and the package has shipped in a couple of days.
So maybe check this kind of things.
    3) Estimates shipping dates are crap.
    4) I will never ever order again anything from them. Only from other retailers.

I was burned by Lenovo once in the past and swore to never order from them directly again. Now I figure I'd give a second chance after seeing the Y500. I hope I don't regret since I'm now experiencing severe touchpad issues with it just after a few days of use.

Gosh medium range notebook with SLI? Holy crap batman! Y500 SLI is out of stock according to their rep (as of yesterday evening) but they should have it in by next week. Geez time to upgrade again from T420 to this baby. A 256 msata for OS boot will be great with 16gb ram. Need to get rid of my system then.

No worries with the english pal, I struggle from time to time as well.

First, the 650m which is on the y500 is not as powerful as the 660m included in the y580 but you can add the additional SLI graphics card and it'll be better than the 660m at the cost of the dvd drive so yes, you would have to add an external dvd drive. It is of my understanding that the cooling for the y580 is not very good and the HDD is very close to the graphics card which is a bad thing unless you plan to get an ssd on the 2.5 HDD bay.

Finally, I think both coolers would work, but with the notepal U3 you could put one below the HDD and the other two where the whole cooling system is, below the big vent.

IdeaPad Y500 - Powerful Gaming Laptop (US)

    Check the pics for reference.

I'd say get the SLI model if you can afford it. I will get an SLI card later down the road and an external drive such as the apple superdrive since disc readers just take up space which can be used for better things on laptops, and I rarely carry dvds with me.

Don't make your decision based on the gpu's because the gtx660m and gt650m are the same gpu running different freqs. From everything I've read, the y500 offers better cooling capabilities than the y580. Which means the y500 cpu will not throttle back due to heat and the gpu will overclock easier. I've been running my gt650m at 1155/2555 completely stable, playing F1 2010 for two straight days and running 3dmark11 in a window in a loop in the background while I'm doing other stuff. If battery life is important then just remember that the y500 doesn't have switchable graphics so the intel hd 4000 graphics is disabled. I have not done any comprehensive test on battery life but my estimation is that the y500 should be able to get 5 hrs with no issues doing basic word processing / web surfing. Either way, I think both are great laptops. I was originally going to get the y580 but I'm glad I did more research and ended up with the y500!

Notebook check rates the SLI set-up almost on par with the 670m. Too bad Lenovo does not offer any CPU upgrade.

Is it possible to detach keys and put them somewhere else on the keyboard?

Many thanks. But I want to buy sli version and it is really two gt650? Because really Y500 fund is only 1pc-gt650? I ordered from: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 Black | Alza.sk
I do not know whether this is the SLI version? much better And if it really is better to y580.and the sli version by up to 40-50%? If I want to install from a CD game you think should be taken to an external dvd drive? And what you think cooler Master is to buy (or u2 u3)? Battlefield 3 will run on the Multi?

I still havent seen a solid review/unboxing for the y500. Can anyone with a y500 or y400 kindly talk about pros/cons, benchmarks, or even a video of it?

I'm desperately looking for an ideapad y500 with SLI that can be delivered in belgium or germany. www.lenovoshop.com/de keeps delaying it and I need it as soon as possible, do any of you know some alternatives?

You do know Germany will probably ship the Lenovo with a QWERTZ keyboard. And depending on where in belgium you are you might end up with an AZERTY keyboard.
If you're a QWERTY user, you might want to wait it out a bit. - I am actually also looking for the SLI offered in Germany, since I'm from the Netherlands and SLI isn't available here.
But the Modules for the extra GPU bay are already up for order in the US, so we might see them here soon. Which means you could get the i7 without dual graphics, and buy the extra GPU in some time.
