sonoritygenius Goddess of Laptops
I wish the keyboard was black =( I think the white overdose on it puts me off
-
i wish it was all black

i wont mind paying a bit of a premium for a Thinkpad X100 if they make one
-
all some good comments. here is my excuse. i am again deploying overseas and need a transitional laptop. my R61 is staying at work and i need something to hold me over till i decide on what i am getting. i only need a machine for email, pictures and internet while on my 3 month train up in the states. i considered the Wind and EEEpc but am totally biased about the Lenovo. Plus I think it looks the best, with the best features yet. and yes, the colors are beat but I dont plan on keeping them that scheme that long. I am going camo.
-
Until Lenovo announced the S10, I was going to wait for a 2nd generation Dell E. I work in a research lab where there are so many bottles and instruments on the countertops, there is a dearth of space to actually put down my laptop.
I would really like to wait for the dual-core Atom but I doubt my self-restraint will holdout. The S10 would be perfect as my lab notebook now that OpenOffice.org 3.0 is coming in September. I'll be using the Wubi installer to put Ubuntu on half of the HDD.
The other temptation is to get a used X40 or X31, but reliability issues would be a huge concern. -
-
i m going to have that!
-
Although I want a red one, but I will wait and see. I just have a feeling that by the time you add all the accessories to it, it will ended up close to a TP's price lol.
-
-
To me that black S10 looks like the best netbook or UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC) I've seen yet. But weather I'll buy it or not depends on price, battery life, and keyboard quality. I'll also try and wait for the dual core atom or maybe the VIA nano processors will start appearing in netbooks.
I really like this trend towards less expensive notebooks with 10" streens. As long as they offer good battery life and typing experience. -
I had a wind pre-ordered but lost the taste of that one since they keep pushing the shipping dates back. Pound for pound, the Lenovo looks like it gonna come out on top. Plus as stated, the Netbook looks the best. I doubt Lenovo will have both the Nano and Atom available, but I am putting my money on the Atom anyway (even after initial testing).
Largest HD, nicest looking, Ram, XP. All for $450. Im all over it. -
-
whats the specs of it ? 10" monitor ?
-
This seems like the best netbook so far. I'm waiting to see Dell's version but from what I know their netbook isn't going to be as compelling. It sounds like all of the Dell versions use low capacity SSDs which I'm not interested in. I'd rather have an 80GB HDD than a 2/4/8 GB SSD.
I also think the S10 looks the nicest so far. They sacrificed a USB port for an express card slot which I think is good. I hope they have wireless N, but I think it's just G. I'd like to see reviews, build quality and battery life before buying.
As for price, based on Lenovo's recent releases their actual price will probably be higher than their planned price. The new T and X models they released are a couple of hundred more than what they expected. So I'm thinking their netbook will be at least $50-$100 more than what they say. Hopefully not though. -
Here's the Netbook Specs @ $450 with XP:
- Integrated 1.3M Camera
- 2 stereo speakers
- Multi-touch Pad & near full size Keyboard (85% full size)
- Integrated Wireless 802.11 b/g,10/100 Ethernet, Bluetooth
- Express card slot for WWAN expansion
- Up to 2-GB Memory
- 4in1 Multi-card Reader
- Large Panel 10.2” wide, LED backlight 1024x600 WSVGA
- Intel Integrated Graphics GMA 950
- Intel N270 CPU 1.6 GHz & Intel 945GSE Chipset
- Large HDD capacity 160G 9.5mm 2.5” SATA HDD (5400 rpm)
- Up to 6 hours with 6-cell battery
I have not found another mini that has all those features for under $500.
Look at the EEEPC, Wind, Acer OneNote, Cloudbook, HP Mini, and Dell E (Slim) dont measure up.
Stewie, Im not seeing much to add except maybe another stick of Ram (if warranty allows) -
techboydino,
Perhaps you're right, this package deal does look pretty complete.
For the RAM, what do you mean by if warranty allows? It said up to 2 GB, so I assume you can add the RAM?
-
From what I have seen its like a little game with the manufacturers. It was a huge issue with the EEEPC and adding more ram. The slot is open and is as simple as one screw. But, they slapped a sticker on it and wrote "void" if removed all over it. Asus since changed that but right now MSI, HP, and a few others have not. Not sure on what Lenovo will say but hopefully they are user friendly.
-
I hope they don't do this, cause it's like forcing people to buy RAM from them.

Sounds too good to be true. And ya... where do I give Lenovo my money =P -
I think that list came from:
http://gizmodo.com/5032618/lenovos-...table-notebook-pc-officially-due-in-september
Or one of the many other gadget/notebook blogs. -

Looks like Averatec is getting in on the action too. Check it here. -
Here's a quick rundown on what I consider the netbooks worth buying. More so close to the 10" usuable range. There are many more that I didnt bother putting on the list because they were too small or junk(IMO). I still like the Lenovo the best, Im glad my Wind never shipped. I was able to cancel my order. Feel free to correct any of my specs, I got them from sites that have the machines on the market and from some tech news sites.

S10 looks like a winner, but the dell could be really nice also
-
HP wins. Screen resolution does it for me.
-
-
Great roundup techboydino.
If all were available right now I think the S10 is the clear winner as long as you're not looking for a higher resolution than 1024x600 which only the HP has.
I agree the HP is too expensive. I don't consider it a true netbook as I think netbooks should be cheap. I read HP is working on a cheaper one. I bet they are going to announce it around the time the S10 and Dell come out to make people wait even longer
I'm leaning toward the EEE PC 1000H. It's available now and it's only a notch less than the S10 in my opinion (less HDD space, no express card slot, a little larger, but has wireless N and 3 usbs and available now).
I don't see how the S10 is going to meet the price stated. Plus as we saw with the new Lenovo models their estimated price was quite a bit lower than the actual pricing. I'm thinking it's' going to be in the $500-$600 range like the eeepc and msi.
The Dell is the other one I want to see, but so far it's only been mentioned with SSD options up to 16GB. I wonder how much the 16GB version will be, plus 16GB is kind of small in my opinion. -
Well, folks, I'm sorry to say it but count me out of the waiting line for the S10.
I succumbed to the allure of metal hinges and active hard drive protection.
1.4 GHz Centrino ULV
512 MB RAM
40 GB HDD
802.11b/g
USB DVD-ROM
Adding in an extra gig of RAM, and the whole kit cost me less than $400.
Got it secondhand at a really nice price from a surplus dealer b/c of some slight scuffs but otherwise its fully functional.
0.5 lbs heavier than the S10, but the full comfort of a classic ThinkPad keyboard and Trackpoint. -

Some more info for anyone interested.
Buy 2 get 1 free in Hong Kong?
Looks like both models are at the FCC for clearance, things are looking good for sooner rather than later. -
-
-
-
I read the S9 and S10 use the same body so they are the same size. Just the screen is smaller.
-
I will buy it if it has a track point and thinkpad style keyboard.
-

Its gonna be a toss up between Lenovo S10 and the Mini-dell inspiron . I woulda considered apple too (even if its not a netbook, just an updated macbook), but I dont think they;re releasing it anytime soon.
UGH. that black and white lenovo thing is hideous. I hope they have a pureblack one or i will end up with the pure white. Im gonna get the 160 gb version for $450. Hopefully the launch price will be even cheaper .... hopefully...
EDIT: Ok, I stumbled upon a link from google that took me tothe ideapad series and it is already listed in their site...even if not uflly functional.
http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/...-category-id=02695ADDF94544E5A11D24AEBC064493
It says "Lenovo recommends Vista Home Premium" .... ***? Does that mean it will be able to support it? -
Lenovo put some teaser (or mistake) content on their site for the S series:
http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/...94544E5A11D24AEBC064493&tab=3#tab-container-3
I hope that means it will come out on schedule. -
Ahh.. there is a pureblack! Im gonna be all over this, specially with the 160gb hd. I think this is gonna win me over the Dell E/Mini Inspiron/Dell E Slim whatever u call. I read that it was originally going to be released on october, but then it was pushed earlier to september.
in the link just posted, it says that the dark blue one will be available on october...that means the red, white and black will be the initial colors to be launched...confirming that it will come earlier on september (even august!) -
Looks like its the real deal. S10 available by tomorrow. It's starting to show up on the main Lenovo splash page. But the link for more details is currently broken.
-
The Dell is rumored for release this Friday so I'm eager to see how that goes. But, from the specs leaked so far the Lenovo seems more on par with the MSI Wind and EEE PC 1000H while the Dell is more like the EEE PC 901 and Acer Aspire One.
I'm stuck between the EEE PC 1000H and the Lenovo S10. I guess the price will be the decider.
I thought the same thing about the color availability -
I think the one Dell is releasing is the 8.9" which is a little too small for laptop substitute for me, a college a student. I need a bigger screen to be able to surf and more importantly type word documents.
-
-
Wow, the S10 is up now with pricing. Looks like they are pretty low priced at around $400. Although the configuration only has 512MB RAM and a 3-cell battery. Go to 1GB and a 6 Cell and I'm sure it will be at least $50 more.
I'm tempted to place an order but I think I will wait for some reviews and to see if that 512MB RAM is easily upgradeable. I think it is... -
Hats off to Lenovo, when is a laptop EVER released much earlier than anticipated. They will sell more simply depending on availability. Although, preorder can also come back to bite you. My MSI wind still would not have shipped.
i was gonna be the early adopter, but im gonna wait for the 6 cell battery. ram is easy to upgrade, as long as i have an 80GB drive and 6 cell, im in.
Lenovo Ideapad S10 Netbook, who's in?
