I just got my Lenovo Y410p, and so far, everything is awesome...except for the hard drive. It's painfully slow, especially compared to the SSD in my last laptop.

I also picked a model that did not come with the 24GB M.2 drive for a cache. I do like the fact of having a 1TB hard drive in my laptop, though.

My question is, I was thinking of swapping the 5,400 speed drive with the following one I found:
Seagate 1TB Internal Serial ATA IIISerial ATA II Solid State Hybrid Drive for Laptops STBD1000400 - Best Buy

Do you think this will make a noticeable difference in boot / read / write speed, since it's a hybrid?

The other option is buying the same 24GB card that Lenovo puts in this line of laptops, but I can't find it anywhere.

Finally, I don't have any experience cloning a hard drive on Windows 8. Any advice / guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you in advance!

    1. I don't think you will be able to add a M.2 drive since i hear Lenovo removes the connector on models that don't ship with the SSD. I could be wrong, your model might differ. M.2 drives are still super hard to find, though.

    2. The drive you are pointing at looks like another 5400RPM spinner with 8GB of cache. To me, it seems like a waste. For that price, buy a SSD and install your OS to it, leaving the bulk data to the 5400RPM drive that is currently in the laptop. To do this, you will need a caddy:
New 9 5mm 2nd SSD HDD Hard Drive Optical Bay Caddy Adapter for Lenovo Y400 Y500 | eBay

Also, i personally recommend this drive here:
Newegg.com - SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Once you get the hardware, remove the faceplate of the current Ultrabay ODD and attach it to the caddy (pm the user "kirkydaturkey" if you need help with this) and then pop the caddy in the ultrabay. Then using a cloning tool, clone the contents of your current HDD to the caddied SSD. Then you can erase the HDD and use it for those big files you are in need of.

To learn how to clone your HDD to SSD, just use Google.

    One quick follow up:

There's a good chance I will purchase the 750m Ultrabay graphics card when it is available. That being said, I can't have the SSD with the OS installed in the Ultrabay drive, as I will need that for the graphics card. Is it plausible to put the OS on the SSD, move that to the main hard drive slot inside the laptop, put the 1TB disc drive in the caddy, and leave that in the ultrabay? I would only use that for data (movies / music / pictures / basic media), so I would swap that out with the graphics card when needed. Is it not recommended to have a disc drive in an Ultrabay caddy?

Yep. That's 100% doable. I also suggest buying a good caddy, should cost no more than 20$ and you can use the faceplate of the ODD. Put the 2.5' SSD into the main bay by opening up your laptop, move the HDD to the caddy, and feel free to swap between HDD and Ultrabay when the 750M comes out. Just be sure to disable write caching on the HDD, otherwise you might experience some file corruption as you are treating your caddied HDD as a removable device.
