Went to turn on my Lenovo Ideapad Y410p laptop and nothing happened! No led lights with power source on and battery in. When I used it two days ago, I ran AVG and spy-bot and everything was fine. Used it a little bit and turned it off. Now nothing??? Did the power/battery disconnect with holding power button for 30 seconds... nothing. Both batteries 9 cell and 6 cell had full charge, tried my other Lenovo charger... no go. A surge couldn't have happened as the laptop is plugged into same strip as my other lenovo laptop is and that one is working fine.

Why was this moved from Lenovo to Ideapad & Essential?
I had it in the Lenovo as it is a problem that happens from time to time to all Lenovo notebooks, not just a specific sub-name.
More people would see it in the Lenovo category and being moved is probably why I haven't had a response yet...

Hmmm I'm sure you've tried this before, but have to attempted to turn it on via the one recovery button?

Another thing that might work is removing everything attached to a USB port as well as the SD card slot if you haven't already.

    Yep, done that plus
We now know, power drain failed.

No activity lights even with battery charging led.

Not turning on even with known good charged batteries.

No power even with known good ac adapter.

Tried plugging it directly on the wall and press novo key ( number 1 page 7) to turn it on instead.

Checked if the power port shows any signs of burnt / damage / looseness .

Pressed Novo key using a charged battery.

Remove battery, harddrive , memory and other accessories and plug directly with a known working adapter and or with a charged battery.

Nothing worked so far, no led light, no beeps. Sounds like a Motherboard problem.

I don't want to send it to Lenovo, rather fix it myself. Can't find any motherboards on eBay that's not shipped from China... where else do I look?

Try unplugging all everything but the harddrive (including the hdd caddy if you have one), then rebooting again.

Did that more than once. No joy.
I had the charger checked, it's good. Checked for power at power supply, it's good. So it is pointing to motherboard and that is gonna be a BIG problem as the only one I found in the USA was $560 :0 My GOSH, I paid $600 for my notebook, then $350 for more memory, 500GB SSD, 9 cell battery etc. All the other ones were from China in the $200-$300 range. It is a 25-45 day to get here shipping.

I know how to swap out the motherboard, but lots of horror stories about them not fitting right or quitting after 2 months. I guess they can heat up (and other tricks) a bad board so it will work for a couple months, past the 30 day warranty period. So I have a problem, try to fix it or have a expensive brick.

Still debating which route to go? [IMG]

    1. Get a motherboard online. So far in USA, I've only found one and it's $540!!! All the rest are from China ranging from $200 and up. Long shipping wait for these, longer yet if I have to send one back. I'm told by local computer tech stores that success rates are not very good... most tech stores won't do laptop motherboards because of that. I contacted 5 local reputable tech stores to get info even though I plan on doing this myself.

    2. Get a used y410p off eBay. Cheapest I found so far are $500 and up... way up. I bidded on one for $475 and lost last weekend. These are in USA. I haven't attempted to try China yet.

    3. Go with China? Since Lenovo is made in China, most parts are from there and are cheaper. Just the long shipping wait.

    3. Do nothing... resign to the fact I have a expensive BRICK.

I'm into this laptop for $600 plus upgrades, $350, total: $950 as of November 2015. [IMG]

Any of the above can be expensive. I have rushed into anything because of that. What would YOU do?

Question, the user & service manual is for Y410P & Y510P... so would a Y510P MB work in my Y410P?

    What would I do?
Well I already was in a similar situation with my y400. After accidentally frying my motherboard, I needed a replacement. Considering thr cost of standalone motherboards I decided to simply buy another laptop. At least I figured I would have spare parts. Unfortunately that motherboard only lasted a couple of months, but I just got unlucky I'd say. My original y400 motherboard lasted over 2 years and this y410p has been going strong since October 2015.

Would a y510p motherboard work in the y410p?
No, sorry mate. It's physically larger than the y410p motherboard, so while technically most of the parts would connect it wouldn't fit in the chassis. A y400 motherboard would work, but then you'd just have a y400 not a y410p.

I put this laptop away as MB died on me and was too expensive to fix, as used MB cost around $500 :0 Anyways if I recall, I got the battery off eBay.

I see I need to change my sig as I have a Samsung laptop now.

Ah bummer, oddly that's the cost of the entire laptop these days.

Do you recall if the battery from oem or a 3rd party? That might help narrow down my search.

Actually, I still have the laptop... it's just all torn apart as I was trying to fix it. I was just waiting for a MB that's cheap enough. If I order from China, they're cheap enough, but the wait is long and if it is bad, I'm stuck again as it wouldn't be worth shipping back to China. It's been broke for a year now and prices on eBay and elsewhere is still not down. :(

I looked and the battery was a 3rd party 9 cell (as Lenovo don't have a 9 cell) I got off eBay.
It was working great and giving me about 5-6 hours before draining.

Yep, swap and drop. Its one of the nicer things about unsoldered CPU's

This laptop and its bigger brother support all the socketed haswell chips that I know of, up to 47w safely. 57w being risky.

Nope. Anything is a big job until you start doing, trust me, I know. I had a teared down laptop all I had to do is to google for new program for programmer, flash it (2 min) and test if it helped. Guess how long it took me? Over a year until I began. 1 day (30-40 minutes total) for flashing and another day week later for fixing broken screw holders (2 hours) and ~550$ laptop was fixed. But it took me >1 year to finally start, don't follow my mistake. We are cheering for you!
P.S. Thermal grease (paste) is needed for swapping CPU. Thin layer or prolonged drop will do fine.

Hahaha.. ain't that the truth... it was last year in January that my Motherboard quit. The price was too high at the time for used MB's at $400 and up... not worth fixing, so I just decided to wait, sure enough, the prices have come down. I've asked John if he would move threads 10-19 from here to over there:

In fact there is a listing just mobo and the CPU for 100 lol

Do you have a part number on your battery? I dont know why the heck I just cant seem to find anything confirmed for the y410p/y510p. Im going to end up going the way of Ultrabay eGPU on my y510p, then slapping the ultrabay 755m into a used y410p once they get around 300-400 on average on ebay.

Im guessing they use the same battery slot for multiple models, or I just suck at searching for batteries lol, thanks in advance!

OMG, this lot appeared just 13 hours ago! Who would have known? I'm sorry anyway. If original seller of 120$ mobo didn't send it then perhaps refund request is still valid?
P.S. Are these Y410ps with UEFI? In this case there is a small chance that BIOS is ruined on original mobo, especaially if Win 10 fast boot option was turned on. I would backuped the dump of BIOS chip by a programmer with clips (no desolder needed) then flashed into it the working dump of newly delivered mobo. That could fix it.

I'll grab that 9 cell battery and look up number and who I got it from off eBay and post in this thread when I get time. It's Sunday and family time watching TV right now...
I first told you I thought it was a OEM, but Lenovo didn't have 9 cell batteries for mine, so I got aftermarket:
    Here it is: 9 Cells Battery 10.8V 7800mAh for Lenovo IdeaPad L12S6A01 L12S6E01 Y410P Y500NT-ISE Y590P
I got it for $28 plus free shipping from bayvalleyparts ( Feedback score 31789)
99.2% positive feedback. Based in Fremont, California, United States. Here is his current store: http://www.ebay.com/sch/bayvalleyparts/m.html?ssPageName=&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2654
It worked fine for the five months I had it before my MB quit. About 5-6 hours time.

Well, the MB I got off eBay arrived today second day shipping. Very well packaged so it wouldn't get damaged. I went down to the local computer store and got some thermal paste for the GPU and CPU for the swap since this MB didn't come with a CPU. Question is just how much thermal paste to put on? Friday is my free day to get this done!

Well hello there mate, welcome back. I'm glad you finally found a replacement motherboard. As for how much thermal paste to use, I've had the most luck with a pea sized amount in the center of the CPU/GPU die. I'd also recommend doing a couple of mods to help with your temperatures, such as the spacer and fan unsheathing mods.

I still use my y410p daily, so just ask if you need to know anything else.

Yup, it's bit late as I'm almost done putting it back together, at where I'm putting the keyboard back in last night before going to bed. Will finish up this afternoon. Hopefully, it will start up... if for some reason it don't start up, I will tear it back down and try some of your mods. Very interesting read... at least I got the re-pasting done on CPU/GPU. The Ideafan script sounds interesting... should I try that on mine? I don't play games, but I like a powerful laptop.

I expected that, sorry for the late response. As for ideafan, yes I recommend it. The script won't make your laptop any more powerful, but it will allow you more control over the fan(s) and thus allow you to push it more.

Well, I'm discouraged!!! Put it all back together and no power light. I do have the second light, a blinking orange light which shows battery is charging, then it went to a white steady light? Nothing turns on though. I need to take a break... I put 6 hours in this MB swapout.

Try take out battery, AC, press power 7 sec and turn on. If nothing then take out battery, AC, RAM, turn it on without RAM, turn it off in half a minute by pressing power 7 sec, put RAM back in and try.

How can I get any power if I take out the battery & AC? I'll try it tomorrow... right now I'm frustrated after working on that for six hours. I have a sneaky feeling what it "might" be, I'll post a picture later tonight or tomorrow... it's concerning a cable that was loose when I took it apart and couldn't find where it plugs in at, but in hindsight, it heads right to where the power supply was... maybe this was my problem and not the MB the whole time? More later.

What is that cable in the picture below. I have a sneaky feeling what it "might" be, it's concerning a cable that was loose when I took it apart (looks like it was tape holding it there on MB) and couldn't find where it plugs in on MB, but in hindsight, it heads right to where the power supply is... maybe this was my problem and not the MB the whole time?

Are you referring to the cable going across the fan there? If I remember correctly it's the screen, but to be sure just watch the y410p teardown video.

Of course connect AC anytime right before you try to power it on :) I think new mobo was with different RAM and now your RAM makes it stuck.
As to loose cable - loose how? Under black duct tape there is a connection.

Media was good... wish it was in caption as I couldn't hear it as I'm deaf. So I still don't know what that cable is for. And yes it was loose, so I have to go back in there and hook it up.

When I lifted the tape it was loose and I didn't see where it was connected to. So, I'll go back in there and see where it's suppose to be connected to now that I saw the video. Wish I knew if that was the power or screen cable? The memory I had before worked fine, so shouldn't it work on this MB?

Oh well, at least you have a visual guide. As an aside yes I believe that is the screen cable, so if it's not connected you won't get an image. External monitors should work in that case however.

Oh and I might as well add the companion video for assembly as well.

Maybe this is it? LCD/LED/LVDS Audio/Video CABLE

If that is the case, I still need to find out why I'm not getting power...

You're absolutely correct mate. I went and found the part of the video where that particular cable is disconnected. It's just the cable for the web camera. Sorry about that.

Well, did you do what I suggested before?
No power would mean No Lights including LED. From what I read you really had no power situation of dead mobo. But after changing motherboard you do have LED flashing so it has power and the problem is in something else. So did you do what I suggested before?

Uh... no I didn't. I haven't touched it since the first try... will be doing that this weekend before I take it apart again. I wanted to go get some tape that they use on computers at the local computer shop first. So wish me luck this weekend.

To clarify, I had no green power light, but the second light next to it, the battery light came on flashing orange, then after a few minutes turned into a steady white light. Then after a half hour I unplugged the laptop.

    Does cooler work?
May it be that steady white means fully charged while blinking means charging?
You did connect all wires, didn't you? Except webcam?

I'm deaf, so I don't hear beeps, fans or any kind of noise. :( Yes, pretty sure I hooked up everything... but I will make sure this time around.

Sorry to read that but you can feel airflow if fan spins.

OK, this weekend I will try what James D suggested and what the guy who I got the MB off eBay suggested... he is being helpful:

I'll give you a list of things to check/do before going further.

    1. Did you make sure and lock the CPU after installing it? I've done this multiple times and it will show the exact symptoms you're having.
    2. Remove everything that isn't required to power on the laptop (Disc drive, HDD, SSD, Battery, ETC) and then see if it powers on.
    3. Remove flea power. Remove the battery and power adapter and hold down the power button for 60 seconds.
    4. Remove the keyboard and triple check the power button ribbon cable. You wouldn't believe how many times I didn't connect it properly.
    ******************************
From James D on notebook review forum: Try take out battery, AC, press power 7 sec and turn on. If nothing then take out battery, AC, RAM, turn it on without RAM, turn it off in half a minute by pressing power 7 sec, put RAM back in and try.

None of the above worked, so I completely tore it down all the way to the fan/heatsink. Will take that off tomorrow as I don't want any dirt on the cpu/gpu overnight. I will slowly put it back together double checking all connections etc tomorrow as it's almost midnight here and hope it works. Meanwhile any tips appreciated.
