I am planning to purchase the "Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p 59388313" from Amazon.com. It has a 1080p screen, SLI graphics, 8 GB RAM and a 1 TB HDD with 8 GB SSD. I previously owned a Lenovo Ideapad Y500 that had a 1 TB with 16 SSD. Will the lack of SSD make a major difference? I am on a budget and I am getting the model from Amazon for $959. I am willing to live with it as long as it boots within 10-15 seconds. I will really appreciate reposes to this thread as I am willing to make the purchase by the end of today. Also, orders from lenovo.com will take more than 4 weeks to deliver. Thanks.

If you get the one with the 8 GB SSD/HDD hydrid drive then you will most likely not get the M.2 connector on your board and you will be limited to a single internal 2.5 SSD/HDD in the future. You can remove the DVD and put in a drive caddy to add a second 2.5 SSD if you like.
-
Thanks for replying. I will upgrade my primary hard drive to an SSD in the future but I intend to use the hard drive for at least a year. I distinctly remember my old Ideapad Y500 booted up in 13 seconds (1 TB + 16 SSD). Will the performance hit be significantly noticeable?
-
Not sure, I have the model with the 24GB SSD cache drive and mine boots up almost instantly. Not sure how fast/slow the hybrid drive is compared to the 24 GB SSD but with only 8 GB of cache it will only be able to cache your OS at the most, everything else will run on the mechanical part of the HDD.

I am considering the Alienware 14 now.
-
Chuck it! With tax it reaches it $1300.
-
The main advantage of the said 8GB Y510p is the fact that it comes with SLI 750M and i7 Quad for only 969$.
Though if you want you can always buy the 1199$ model on lenovo com, it comes with 16GB of RAM, a 24GB M.2 Drive, 750M SLI and an i7. -
If I get it from lenovo.com. it will take unto 4 weeks for it to arrive. I would settle for the cheaper one for now. I can always replace it with a faster SSD in the future. I hope the SSHD isn't that bad.

I have a Y500 with a 1TB + 16GB ssd (msata card). (It is probably a little different but I think the software is the same). I used the 16gb ssd as cache for a little while, then partitioned it so I could have 8gb storage and 8gb caching. This is totally subjective, but I noticed no difference in performance/loading up programs between having a 16gb cache or a 8gb cache.
Also the quick bootup times is probably due to windows 8's "Fast boot" and not the SSD. -
Hey guys, how about the non-SSD version or the one with only 1 TB 5400rpm hard drive?? Does it have the M.2 connector?
-
Hit and miss, the only one that comes with the connector for sure if that one with the 24GB SSD. Otherwise it seems to be 50:50 if you get it or not.
-
Oh that's too bad. I can't take that risk. The one with the 24GB SSD is quite expensive for my budget. I guess I must still wait a little longer, hopefully the one with the gt 755m sli in the lenovo's websites will be priced reasonably in the upcoming months. Thanks for the response anyway....

I'm pretty sure the hybrid drives have the 8GB cache built in and it can't be accessed separately. Not sure whether Windows manages the cache or if that is handled by the firmware in the drive. I'd always go for the system that affords me the most flexibility since spending $1000 and not being able to upgrade would make me seriously consider searching through the Lenovo outlet store until I found a 24GB SSD model in the right price range.
Cheers, -
Caching handled by firmware and SSD invisible in Windows.

The price increased on Amazon and missed on the opportunity. Feeling extremely sad.

So I got the Lenovo Ideapad Y510p with a Core i7 processor, 8 GB DDR3 RAM, 1 TB + 24 SSD, 2GB VRAM Nvidia GT750M and a Blu-Ray reader. I love watching movies in good quality. Is the screen quality as good as the Y500? I got this with a student discount at $ 1020. I am going back from a retina screen...I hope it is worth it
The estimated delivery date is 27th December...I hope it arrives earlier. -
Why not get the dual GPU model instead for the same price?
-
He said he loves watching movies. Can't buy the BD-ROM ultra bay as an add-on but you can add the 2nd GPU. So far I don't think it's really a big step up since many games still don't support it. If SLI was a passive feature and was applied automatically to everything it would be more worthwhile. Of course if your games support SLI it's great to have.
Cheers, -
What are you talking about? Pretty much everything except CoH2 supports SLI and benefits greatly from it.
-
Well I suppose I should start every post like the Federal Court's attorneys do: In my opinion...
Whether something gets 30 FPS or 60 FPS is something I personally can't detect. Many of my friends feel the same. We are not hardcore gamers but we put in decent hours. Many of the games we play are older and and are not the first person shooters and high end role playing games that benefit the most form this technology so perhaps it's not something we find particularly useful. Of my group I'm the only one who has SLI. With all the people complaining of micro stutters (which I don't think I've ever perceived) I'm not sure SLI is something I would ever seek out in the future.
I'm certain SLI is a great feature for some. I'm just rather ambivalent about it's usefulness.
If I was into watching movies while on the road I would have sacrificed the 2nd GPU for the BD-ROM as well.
Cheers, -
Well there's your answer. The difference between 30 and 60 FPS is night-and-day for people who play online multiplayer shooters competitively. People chasing more frame rates and smoothness will even go for 120 Hz and 144 Hz monitors. And microstuttering around 30-40 FPS and below is something that bothers most users to some extent. It's probably the biggest turn-off of multi-GPU. So consider yourself blissfully immune to all of this.
-
Lower the settings and/or resolution. Personally, i do not mind playing all my games at Medium 720p (on a 14 inch display), and would rather have the extra FPS (due to inconsistency in most maps and crowded areas).

I am a super casual gamer. The output of the non SLI graphics is better than my old XBOX. The laptop has been released to manufacturing. The estimated delivery date is 30th December
I was attempting to rent a computer but it costs like 100 bucks plus tax for a month. I was planning to get a temporary laptop from Best Buy or Amazon until the Ideapad arrives. What would you guys suggest? -
Budget?
You know, if you are a super casual gamer, Intel HD 4400 might be all you need. Try looking for a Lenovo u430 @ Best Buy, cancel the order for the Y510p.

Okay! Okay! Not that casual
I don't have a laptop for a period of one month until I get the Y510p. I am learning JAVA and need a super cheap computer that I can return in 15-30 days. -
Wow! Lenovo said that the laptop is going to be still delayed. I am furious.
-
Call them again, tell them they made a mistake with your order, complain in angry fashion. Usually they might give you express shipping and or free 50$ giftcards.
-
If you can cancel your order, you can buy it from costco:
Lenovo IdeaPad Y510P Laptop | Intel Core i7 | 2GB Graphics | 1080p | Backlit Keyboard
I'm pretty sure it ships out the day you order/next business day if it is late in the day.
edit: just realized you have to be a CostCo member. I've noticed BestBuy also offers it, and also other vendors like NewEgg (I think they may be on backorder at NewEgg).
If you need the laptop ASAP then I suggest you try canceling your order.
