I have the 240Hz display on my Legion 7i and it states that it is a AUO 048E. Not much more information than that in the device manager but it is definitely 500 nits and has wide colour gamut (with XRite calibration). I had the 144Hz Y740 before and it was an LG panel that was indeed fabulous but the 240Hz panel is better and has a much better response time.

Very good information, thank you.
Does it have G-sync? -
@Kalen Well the one that @Muyfa666 sent definitely does not have wide color gamut support regarding what lenovos specsheet say (they would mention Adobe RGB or DC P3 Coverage and not 100% SRGB if it would be wide gamut) - unless they made a mistake of course
https://psref.lenovo.com/Detail/Legion/Lenovo_Legion_7_15IMH05?M=81YT000KMX -
@Kalen If you want to know the exact model of the display you could try to install SiSoft Sandra Lite and go to hardware information -> Monitor and select the monitor in dropdown.
Feel free to share if you do
Adding to that it could still be that AUO 048E is the panel i was talking about. AUO always specifies a model number and a internal partnumber. AUO 048E is the Internal Part Number. A specific model number would be something like AUO B156HAN10.1 or similar -
I decided on the 144Hz 81YU000PMX. It has pretty much everything I want in a laptop.
I am getting a desktop eventually, so the 15-inch will be a perfect couch companion. I'll most likely sell my Y740-17 for the benefit of this new one. -
Are there any special BIOS etc that are recommended?
And should I buy a calibration profile? -
@Muyfa666
It seems like it is factory calibrated and even comes with xrite color management software. So it can actually run in SRGB Mode aswell
https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLaptops/comments/hw88vm/legion_7i_arrived_today/
--> This user also confirms it being the BOE NV156FHM-NY5 in the comments and another user is talking about the possibility of AUO B156HAN10.2 being the 240hz display
-
all current versions of the 7i have access to advanced bios using a key combination, all will work for undervolt if you change the right settings from advanced bios.
-
Aha. Very nice. I will most likely do a clean install thou, but will the calibration stay the same?
What is the key combination? ;-) -
there is a long version and a short version, both do exactly the same thing. go into bios, then FN+R, FN +N, then F10 to save and reboot, F2 again to go back into bios and you should see the advanced menu
edit: above is the short versionmetalangel likes this. -
Got my unit today.
First impression was misery - artifacts all over the screen after some system updates. Tried multiple reboots and driver reinstalls to no avail.
Decided to do a clean install, and voila - everything works perfect. Reinstalled all important stuff, so no bloat.
Screen is ok, bleed in the corners, but not too distracting. Keys and fan are good, no coil whine etc.
Performance seem good enough, but it does run hot even with a healthy undervolt of -140Mv.
Should I consider a repaste? -
Back it goes. The bleed was too much for the price. :-/
-
thats unfortunate, how much was the unit you ordered?
-
About 3450$.
-
Jesus christ, this is a very bad time to get a laptop more than $2000, you are sure to get buyers remorse when spending that much only for new midrange laptops to match your high end laptop half a year later.
-
yikes, for that price it better be gold plated. you can get an aorus 17x for less than that with much better specs and no max-q
-
We have crazy high electronics taxes in my country, so laptops will always be about 25% more expensive here.
-
Ouch..
Here in the USA the Legion 7 with similar specs would cost over $2,000USD, Maybe less if you can find a good coupon.
Personally i think you should keep your Y740 and wait until next year for the Ampere (NVIDIA) laptops if you wantKalen likes this. -
Pretty sure his next laptop is an Alienware Area 51m R2 (I'm subscribed in the thread he's been inquiring lol)

Has anyone tried mounting Three SSDs on the 60Wh battery model?
From pictures I can see that the 2.5" connector is actually a rubbon cable, so I was wondering if a 2.5" SSD could e stripped of it's casing and taped to the inside of the laptop, maybe need a single sided M.2 on the M.2 slot so the 2.5" connector can fit under the M2. SSD? -
got manual fan control working, it's cooler boost on/off only but it works excellent and it's not just enabling the normal high fan speed, it's an actual "turbo" fan speed. for linux i found a tool meant for the Y series that works
(linux only)
https://odintdh.itch.io/extremecooling4linux
for windows you can use RW-Everything to enable extreme cooling (cooler boost) manually.
RW-Everything method for windows:
run rw-everything, then click "Access", then "Embedded Controller", go to this line and change "80" to "40" and
fan boost comes on
change back to "80" to go back to normal fan functionmetalangel and KING19 like this. -
no but i thought of giving it a try when i order another nvme, right now i have the 1tb nvme it came with and a 2.5" sata ssd. i'm thinking it should work with a little creativity, 2 nvme m.2's and either a third with a m.2 to sata3 adapter or take the 2.5 out of its casing as you mentioned
i have the 17" with 80wh battery, im not sure how much extra room the 15" has but it looks doable -
You will need to get the ribbon cable for the 2.5" SSD then.
Another possible solution is mSATA SSD with an Msata to SATA adapter.
BTW do the M.2 slots accept SATA M.2 SSDs or only NVMe? -
I see lol.
The Alienware Area 51m R2 is a true beast especially with a i9 10900K and a 2080 Super.
Its impossible, Any 2.5 drive will block the 2nd M.2 slot and it needs to be fully inserted for the motherboard to recognize it.
Plus even if it was possible you wont be able put the bottom cover back on. -
For half a year at least, before it gets wrecked by rtx 3000 laptops
-
sounds about right, hopefully 3000's come sooner than later
-
Yep, my next latop will be Alienware Area 51M R2.
Of course RTX 3000-laptops will best it in 6-12 months, but that's always the case somehow, isn't it?
I want to play now, and RTX 2080 Super will still be good for very high settings in 1-2 years.
A major plus is I ordered the 51M with the 360Hz G-sync screen. I think it will be nothing short of amazing, even with desktop standards.
The delivery was several months so I had to cancel it. I'll wait and see what happens.Last edited: Nov 10, 2020 -
No, not at all really. Gpus come out in a predictable manner with about two years in between generations. So if you get a RTX 3080 laptop you know you have the best for the next two 2 years.
Similarly, if you get a 2080 super laptop now you know you are going to have the best for the next six months before RTX 3000 laptops take its place.
If you really can't/don't want to wait then by all means go for it. But seeing that you have a 2080 Y740 I would recommend waiting.
I know I wouldn't want to spend 4 grand on a top of the line laptop just for it to be midrange class in less than a year. Just some food for thought.Muyfa666 likes this. -
i want to order a new panel for my 17" Legion 5i, i already have the 144hz dolby vision 300nit display and it looks great but i want g-sync which i've also managed to enable on this non g-sync panel as a g-sync compatible display but its a pain in the ass and i have to repeat it every time the drivers update.
my current panel is B173HAN04.4
im thinking of replacing with either a B173HAN05.1 or a B173HAN04.0 and both are from laptops that have g-sync panels. i'd be greatful if someone could tell me any reason these panels wouldnt work, ideally i'd like to go with the B173HAN05.1 panel for its 1000:1 contrast ratio
all 3 panels:

Wait how?
-
if i use DDU to remove all drivers, prevent windows from installing them automatically, and install the drivers manually, after a reboot i have the g-sync menu in control panel. as soon as i install geforce experience or update the nvidia drivers again the option goes away.
i think it gets seen as a gsync compatible display, i also think if i forced the use of an EDID from a similar freesync/gsync display via a monitor.inf edid override i could make it permanent. as long as the frame rate stays above 35-40fps it works great, below that and it starts to flicker.seanwee likes this. -
finally, i found the 17" gsync panel.
https://www.panelook.com/N173HCE-G33_Innolux_17.3_LCM_parameter_37006.html
only panel that actually shows as g-sync on panelook.com , just grabbed one from amazon at $90 -
smashed my old R20 score (3444), now 3582. i think i'll be happy with 3600 but thats what i said about 3400 and 3500

still on my original 144hz panel but i got G-Sync working on my non G-Sync panel by modifying the EDID and force loading it. link includes video clip of g-sync demo, any stutter you see is on the video only, not on my display where its smooth af!!

Lol, G-Sync unavailable but enabled.
-
*Unvalidated but enabled. im not sure if it shows this on all "g-sync compatible" displays but im just glad it works, on linux so far and if i have some time before my new (actual) g-sync panel gets delivered i'll try making it work in windows but the way windows handles display "drivers" (really just a signed .inf file) it makes things harder to have any control over like everything else on windows
-
Is reaching the screen and taking it off easy?
-
i just finished replacing it, the bottom of the case does not need to be taken off, the bezel pops off and has a thin strip of reusable adhesive strip on it but comes off easily. the display is held to the lid frame solely by very strong reusable (if your careful) adhesive strips.
if you move slowly the panel will come out without breaking but it's also kind of an expected risk with these types of panels, i got mine out without breaking and im glad because it's gonna be going back in.
1. the panel has a manufacturing defect about 1/4 in. long that presents as a bright streak.
2. the panel has the wrong EDID info showing as "CMN176E" instead of "CMN175C" its supposed to be so windows wont see it as a g-sync panel
time to look for another panel i guess. -

Guys, in the end, do you really recommend Legion 5 (Ryzen 4800H+1660 Ti) instead of any other model (especially crappy Asus TUF variants) for me for the stability and cool temps? Amazon was selling 999 bucks and now over 1100, changing day by day. I also saw Acer Helios 300's 2020 model really disappointing for the keyboard, and some other issues according to Jarrod'S Tech and many other reviewers unlike 2019 model which was great.
And Legion 5 appears to be a highly praised and well-refined model.
Any thoughts? -
Does re-pasting void the warranty? Anyone know?

If you're a Costco member, they have the Intel/1660 Ti version on sale for $949 right now. Speaking of, does anyone know if this version supports DisplayPort 1.4 over its USB-C connector? I'm thinking of picking one up but would want to take advantage of the 120 Hz refresh rate on my 4K external monitor. -
I found a a good performant SSD with a very short PCB, the Kingston KC600. There is a 2TB version but don't know yet if it's as short. The 1TB and lower capacities are very short
-
i was thinking of using something like this with a third m.2 ssd https://www.amazon.com/JIUWU-AD905A-Connector-Converter-Adapter/dp/B07R6KNR4H
-
I thought about that too. But no idea how much clerance there is under a mounted M.2 in the proper slot. Does it seem like it will fit to you? Single sided M.2 would help if the populated side ends up not down.

Well, I am certainly disappointed with Lenovo. My first 7i was replaced because it was thermal throttling galore; the replacement completely died. Asked to return and I purchased one with a 2080 Super Max-Q instead. However, it's been over a month since the initial request for that refund on the dead replacement so I am having to return the 2080 Super one. Lenovo would rather me return the one I paid more for, and send someone out to repair the dead one by replacing the motherboard, memory, and SSD than return the dead one. Broken promises, a whole lot of wasted time, and a lackluster quality control have me really questioning my next purchase. I don't know if it will be with Lenovo...

so you got stuck paying for 2 laptops, only 1 of which is working?Kalen likes this.

Unfortunately yes. At least one will be relieved soon but this has been a very disappointing experience for sure. I'm not losing too much since there isn't a giant difference between the 2080SMQ and the 2070SMQ, but the thermals for the 2080SMQ were fantastic...

in the years past i've had some less than great experiences with lenovo support, so far with the legion 5i i've been lucky and motherboard replacement that broke from my own doing was replaced without issue which kind of surprised me since i removed the control sticker, had the motherboard out numerous times, used liquid metal on the gpu/cpu which of course left stains on the copper heat sink. i was expecting them to tell me to get fscked but i got lucky i guess.
i'd be pissed if i were you, those 2070smq/2080smq legion 7i models are not cheapseanwee likes this. -
Yes i bought mines for $999 back in September and never had any problems with temps while gaming, even games like RDR2 temps hangs around the mid 70c to low 80c range. The 1660ti stays in the upper 60c to mid 70c range. Another feature that the legions have that most gaming laptops still dont have especially the AMD models that it has a MUX switch which allows you to disable Optimus for some increase of gaming performace with a cost of battery life. Speaking of battery life its not that good, with Optimus on i'll say about 4-5 hours and 2-3 hours with Optimus off. Ever since the $899 sale about a few weeks ago the price went up to $1050 because people was buying them like crazy and Amazon kept running out of stock but its still a good price to me for a powerful AMD machine.
That a good deal there, plus its comes with the 144hz 300nits screen, 16GBs of RAM and 512GB SSD+1TB 7200 RPM HDD.
I think it supports Displayport 1.4 but im not sure.Last edited: Nov 28, 2020 -

I asked on Reddit and it’s DP 1.2 unfortunately. I wish it had the RTX 2060 - would gladly pay a reasonable premium for it.
