Here you are:
I still don't know what i did that i can have latest BIOS + UV + 90 watt on GPU.
Maybe it's just because i never use Intel SGX or secure boot and update the intel management firmware always before i update the BIOS.

Don't do know nothing, keep it that way!
I have spoken with Lenovo Technical Assistance and they told we can't rollback and if we do is it at our own risk (obvious).
My warranty ends in end of May and I will probably use a eeprom programmer to revert to V1.06 or V1.08. -
Thank you and yes i will keep this setup now until they release a bios version with custom fan curves.
Please keep us updated. I'll check the forum everyday in the hope to read good news from you, because i feel sad that there are many people now who have so much issues with this great laptop.
Have a nice weekend anyway!

I got my laptop back from service. Sad to say, they installed v1.12.
Are there any safe way to backflash, or am I stuck?
At least it works again. -
Hello,
not the news we all wanted to hear but it was clear that they will load the latest BIOS..
You can have mine im nearly done now after 2 years. I am 90% satisfied with this laptop i love it but the flute whining fan jet engine noise is killing me.
I have started a gaming session yesterday after a hard and long working day.
I've had fun until i was chased by some guys searching for me in a forest.
I was totally unable to hear their steps and where they are i have just hear a flute whistleing tone right next to me coming out from my fans.
It was so annoying and extremly fun spoiling.
Back to the main discussion:
After reading what can happen to users when downgrading BIOS, I can't recommend it to anyone.
So in my opinion you just could try this:
1. Downgrading the BIOS flashing it with the SPI programer.
2. Desolder the BIOS and resolder a new one -> there are some sellers of Y740 bios chips in the web:
https://www.ebay.de/itm/BIOS-chip-Lenovo-Legion-Y740-15IRH-Legion-Y740-15IRHg-New-original-programmed/114674467549?_trkparms=ispr=1&hash=item1ab32182dd:g:lnsAAOSwcnpgIkzz&amdata=enc:AQAFAAACcBaobrjLl8XobRIiIML1V4Imu%2Fn%2BzU5L90Z278x5ickkAgU0umhwUTmgTFbE5cu7zegMeGXpcATfengfSYYKeMmx2h8gtcZr%2BjuJeEGAaQYBnzC%2FMPlUaOZf%2FQkfjo0VMHOnIh5r%2FWs2JRDWFxAMWT3E7VhoJDSTnzmL5Sq7ExFcvisUsghvz%2FNGL%2F3WowXORSxLMArlCJko%2B7WlDDUTRYCmHLo%2BQrCMhK%2FgTmiZoZOyI32rs6XM%2B4q%2Foivpqysrn8cJ1%2Bn0G9d%2BzeUo0RCcKHvufmK4A5KH5KXS7FFXmM%2FT0U%2BgPcPK%2F2%2B9YRXrFl%2FS2RAi9QsDxt6A8oYRQL1zZa34gWkwJMQkBdDA20kDGChFUhOBmzRz5G3vPe4zCmRFfOivBBGboSstA4a0QVWm4tj2wnBV4zyKJYFuEqW%2BMs1DzloEHqxNbdgBWfuUGkI8iuGk1bBWV1DtBft8hl6wQlfTxUurqtjxdHZmiOU7pUUvqDidqPqim%2BxZmd2%2FRrVBx7hmmdYOG3xwKq5HA9eJrki6nHuSjR2V7f%2FZHO88199YwdNwdA17HmAFiBEEHqP%2BWtzcEJ3syXRjBZ92GkPUh0H1kbo%2BPTFJJCAl%2Bg95qZ6TjnLpk%2FgRKun2JiOfQv82t%2BKf6c%2Bb8o4gr8kHFFuzDCpH36zcmUlXfg7OfpSXKUf80Zvr%2FjadimG7mg81KUc8hyb%2Frh4Pnpyh4yS176pNw8%2F3WD9qWoJLFdAPWw4LO%2FBB0P6iCgbhcD%2B50UK4L%2B633EUWUKwGyCiq5V8twXeWaGdjrG8RUKqMsgYkeIcFoQt4OgPChUsRq%2FfEZ058ZU526g%3D%3D|cksum:114674467549fbdaea8764984c90b058608c653c333f|ampid

But you need to make sure that the seller loaded the BIOS you want on it and that it fits to your motherboard.
Also you need some really good soldering skills.
3. [expensive] buying a new mainboard at Aliexpress, also asking this vendor that he loaded the BIOS you want on it.

If you really want to do one of these 3 steps you can try to downgrade the BIOS per software. If you brik it again you will have the hardware to get it back.
As i don't know exactly your technical skills this is not a direct recommendation but these are my ideas which I did not want to withhold from you.
4. sell your Y740 - At the moment there is not much gaming hardware available for a good price.
I think you will get a great value for it.Last edited: Apr 9, 2021 -
Right you are.
It's not unusable per se, so I will most likely sell it when the new 16-inch RTX3080 Legion is available.
I dare not try the BIOS programmer again. -
Hi everyone!
I have 17" version of laptop.
Please tell me if it is worth buying 1.5 mm thermal pads (40x120x1.5) for all elements? Or is it better to choose other sizes?Last edited: Apr 13, 2021 -
1.5mm pads are in some places too thick in my opinion. You can get by with 1mm or stacking 0.5mm ones. There is a chart/picture somewhere in the thread that i used.danfr1d likes this.

If I try to install 1.5 mm thermal pads, the cooling system will not close?
I have never changed thermal pads in my life and therefore I am trying to find out all the nuances)
and please tell me what is your legion model, thanks! -
I have the 15 inch version with 8th gen i7.
With 1.5mm pads the cooling system will close. no worries. Thats not a issue. But there will be more cap between the heatsink and the dies for the gpu and cpu. I saw a massive cooling boost for my machine when changed the pads from the original ones as some of the original pads were rolled up and overlapping. So smaller pads got, for me atleast, a better contact with the heatsink and the cpu/gpu dies.
I mean, you could get the same results with 1.5mm pads, but I just feel that for my laptop, they would have been / were too thick on some parts. There are couple of places where 1.5mm pads are needed, but mostly they were 0.5mm and 1mm pads.
As a job, its not that difficult. And not too precise, I think some youtubers just put thermal paste to some places where pads were previously. So no need to worry! Check the guide posted on this thread, you should find it with a search function. And some people have posted that changing the pads did nothing to them if i remember correctly. I think its just a matter how the original pads have been applied.danfr1d likes this. -
Has someone else issues with FN+Q? When I bought the laptop there was a performance difference between performance mode and balanced mode in fps. After 3 month usage it seems the FN+Q mode is now equal for games. Beside that issue the quiet mode is the noisiest mode with fast fan sounds. Has this to do with latest windows updates or is this perhaps an hardware issue? All drivers are up to date.

FnQ gives extra 10W.
Use HWINFO and see gpu power.
80-84W } 90-95W -
I bought a new CH341a-clamp, and this time I managed to downgrade my laptop to BIOS v1.06. Yay!

Hello Legion Y740 pros!
I need some advice.
My Y740 system is running the "OEM" Nvidia graphics driver package. I'm not getting any updates offered for it from the Lenovo updating app but a check of the Nvidia site shows there have been many driver pack upgrades since I first got it.
It has the NVIDIA GeForce® RTX 2070 Max-Q 8GB upgrade in it.
It's running fine and I'm not having any issues with it. Other than video editing, sysadmin, and the massive Microsoft Flight Sim I'm not doing any gaming-type duty with it. As a sysadmin I do tend to prefer stability over bleeding-edge graphics performance gains.
That said, I've seen comments here in the forum that manually upgrading the video driver could improve performance, improve battery-life, bring me warm Earl Grey tea, etc. any of which I could benefit from.
So my questions are these:
1) Would it be worthwhile to pull down and manually upgrade the video driver from Nvida directly?
2) Based on your experience (and my graphics usage) would it be better to use the "Game Ready" version? or the "standard" one?
3) Is the latest driver release OK on the Y740 or would an earlier version be better?
I really appreciate your advice.
Cheers!

I often use Nvidia’s Studio Driver on my editing laptops. I rarely have issues with their Game Ready Driver (GRD) either minus a few rare occasions.
-
Thank you B0B!
I appreciate your kind response this weekend.
Based on your encouragement, I went forward with going to the Nvidia site and selecting/pulling down the latest Studio driver for the video card today.
I was running the NVIDIA VGA Driver 26.21.14.3165 (? Driver Version 431.?)
(Self reported in the Nvidia control panel applet as "NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 with Max-Q Design")
Now I'm running the NVIDIA VGA Driver 30.0.14.7168 (Studio Driver Version 471.68)
Again, still self-reporting as "NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 with Max-Q Design". (That made me feel better as the Nvidia driver download page didn't specifically list "Max-Q" under the Supported Products list.)
The install went on totally fine (actually ripping fast compared to the Dell video drivers I do on our systems at work) and didn't even require a system reboot.
I did download both of the available video-drivers from the Lenovo Y740 support page. And also exported all my drivers via a PowerShell routine before running the installer. (belts and suspenders just in case!)
Will see if the battery life improves...it was lasting about 1 hour or so, with the screen dimmed pretty low just doing web surfing work...not even watching videos or gaming.
Thanks again!
I'll definitely feel more confident directly updating it now moving forward via Nvidia.
Cheers!
