Lenovo Legion y530 Owners Lounge

I'm rather surprised that there doesn't seem to be an owners lounge for this laptop so I'll start one.

I have a fully upgraded y530 coming to me on Monday (12/17) which I doubt I will keep, but I will post performance results here for posterity.

The specs of the laptop I am receiving are as following:
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1060
CPU: Intel i7 8750H
RAM: 16GB Dual Channel @2666Mhz
Storage: 256 GB (PCIE?) SSD
Screen: 144Hz, 300Nits

I'll give more detailed information once it arrives since it seems that information is scarce on the 1060 model and 144Hz screen. I'll see about repasting it as well and if there are any BIOS updates. If anyone has anything to say about their y530, please feel free to share. It really is a gorgeous little entry gaming laptop.

I have had mine for two weeks or so but I got it with the i5 instead of the i7 (it only comes with 8 GB of ram).

I added an 8 GB stick of ram and replaced the 250gb SSD and HDD with a 960 GB Corsair m.2 SSD that I got for relatively cheap (~190£).

I don't know about the i7 but the 1060 combined with i5 is really good in terms of heat management. After a few hours of gaming (OW etc.), the CPU barely hits 80°C while the GPU stay at <70°C.

I love that most of the ports are on the back as it leaves the sides empty. Battery life is kinda meh but I never take it outside of my flat anyway, it's only unplugged when I watch series on my bed.

The keyboard is honestly pretty nice, I love the key travel and I don't really miss the RGB especially with the price premium that tags along with usually. I also love having a numpad again, it's not exactly the same as ones from "normal" keyboards but I use it as a calculator and for that it's perfect.

The trackpad, while small, is nice and accurate.

All in all, I'm really pleased with my purchase, I spent around 1,450£ in total with the extras I bought, which IMO is not much considering what I got. The screen is really nice as well with the 144 Hz refresh rate!

 

I have also ordered the I7 GTX 1060 model after my old laptop's dying symptoms escalated yesterday. Was a toss up between this and the Asus GL703.
Judging from the notebookcheck review on the 1060 version of the laptop the wifi card is a significant downgrade from the markets average. I'm guessing it should be replaced but I haven't been able to find out any info online on what cards are compatible. (First time changing a wifi card as well.)

 

I have the i5 8300h + gtx 1050ti and a 512 ssd. I am satisfied with this notebbok which is an upgrade for me from my ex nitro 5
i intend to repaste it sooner or later, now is in testing.

Hello All.. I just got my legion i7, 1050 ti, ssd, hdd, 60 hz.

I bought a second stick of RAM and will say that the 2666 mhz ballistixs 8gb SO-DIMM latency is wrong and does not clock to 2666 mhz like my factory stick does. It only clocks to 2400 MHZ. I have to purchase a different brand with a 17 cas latency to try. 16 CAS Latency does not work.


I Repasted with Best Buy brand paste.. will see how it goes.

 

Vengence DDR4 SODIMM RAM does correctly run at 2666 mhz.

Repasted and Undervolted and CPU temps are down 7-8 C under a stress test, no change at idle.

GPU seems to be running at 63 instead of 64. To close to say its from paste or just because the shared cooler isnt working as hard with the cpu.

 

what paste did you use ?

For my Ram, I bought a second stick of Samsung 8GB DDR4 SODIMM 2666 1.2V to make it 16gb of ram and yes it is dual channel.

Anyway, it's been around 6 weeks since I've been using it again no problem at all except I wish we could modify the fan curve as while GPU temperatures never hit 60 degrees, the CPU can easily hit 80 degrees. But, there's a shortcut (Ctrl Shift 1) to activate turbo boost and while it's an extra step, as long as I turn it on while playing, even the CPU doesn't hit 70 degrees anymore.

FYI I undervolted the CPU by 130 mV but have not repasted (yet).

 

I just bought a Y530 1050ti version, I updated all drivers and after updating, the Intel Graphics Control panel is gone. Has any one able to fix this?

After lurking around for a secondary machine to my 2015 Retina MacBook Pro I recently bought a Y530 "base model" which I got for a very good price at a local dealer.

Regular price would have been 899€ for the machine, I got one for 577€ - factory sealed even.

I got the i5-8300H
8Gb DDR4 2666mhz
GeForce GTX1050 non-TI with 2gb vram
1tb hdd with 16gb intel optane.


Just finished setting it up - and I’ve been positively impressed with it. Build quality, gaming performance for a 2gb non ti 1050 are better than I expected.
Luckily I got the BOE06 screen with 300 nits of brightness.

Unfortunately I had to disable the Optane memory in the bios and switch to AHCI since I have to run Linux as secondary OS. I completely forgot how a hdd only system performs since I’ve been using a PCIe based flash device.
On the one hand it’s impressive how optane boosts the performance - on the other hand since I had to disable optane for Linux I got the HDD only feeling again ..... quite ok, unless you do some multitasking.

Port selection is fantastic in such a thin device.
With gaming laptops you often read thermals, hot, throttling and so on - Lenovo did a fantastic job on the Y530 in regards of thermals - I get really good temps and no throttling at all.
Nevertheless I’m going to repaste with Kryonaut - just to get the optimum out of the cooling system.


Perfect machine for that price - there’s almost no alternative other than the Acer Nitro 5 with AMD Ryzen in that ~600€ price range.
