So I'm considering getting a refurbished X301. I have a question and I'm feeling kind of foolish, I've tried searching the net and the forum and I'm kind of thinking they may be the same thing. But....if they are, why do they refer to them differently. So the screen on one of the laptops says
    13.3" WXGA+ (1440 X 900) TFT, W/ Camera
    13.3 WXGA+ (1440 X 900), w/ LED backlight

So I see the camera is the difference between them, but what is the difference between TFT and LED or are they the same?

    Thanks

Typically if it states LED specifically then it uses LED to backlight the display. Typically most laptops use CCFL. The difference in the technologies is quite significant, but the end results in display quality are questionable.

    I myself prefer LEDs because:
    a. They are generally slightly brighter
    b. They MAY use less energy - though it depends on the number of LEDs used in the display
    c. They allow the display package to be thinner and marginally lighter

Some users argue the colour display is also better quality. I've done a side by side test of my laptop versus another Inspiron with a CCFL screen and I can see the difference. It's not massive, but it's there.

Also LEDs age better than CCFL, which after time can take a while to "warm up". But we're talking quite some time here, years rather than months.

Most notebooks seem to be shifting toward LEDs nowadays; but there is nothing wrong with the other technology.

Is there a difference in price for the two?

    Here's where I get a bit confused.
Looking at a non outlet build it says this.
Display type 13.3 WXGA+ TFT (1440x900 LED backlight) 3x3 UltraConnect
In that case it lists both TFT and LED.
But here are the listing for 2 different builds.
    $1,105
    Processor Intel® Core™ 2 Duo SU9400 (1.4GHz, 6MB L2, 800MHz FSB)

Operating System Genuine Windows Vista Business 32

    Screen 13.3 WXGA+ (1440 X 900), w/ LED backlight

    Memory 1GB (2 X 512MB) PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory

Hard Drive 64GB SATA 2.5" SSD Solid State Drive

    Optical Storage None

    Wireless Integrated Wi-Fi wireless upgradable

    Warranty 1 Year Standard

Battery 3 Cell Lithium Polymer Battery (4.3 Hour Run Time)

Features Carrying Case, UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad) with Fingerprint Reader

    Bluetooth No
Video Card Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD

    A second.
    $1,209

    Processor Intel® Core™ 2 Duo SU9400 (1.4GHz, 6MB L2, 800MHz FSB)

Operating System Genuine Windows Vista Business 32

    Screen 13.3" WXGA+ (1440 X 900) TFT, W/ Camera

    Memory 2GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory

Hard Drive 64GB SATA 2.5" SSD Solid State Drive

    Optical Storage Ultrathin DVD Burner

    Wireless Intel® WiFi Link 5100 (1x2 AGN)

    Warranty 1 Year

Battery 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (6.5 Hour Run Time)

Features Carrying Case, UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad) with Fingerprint Reader

    Bluetooth Yes

Video Card Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD

The second one obviously looks like a better deal and I'm leaning towards, but I'm just curious what the difference between the two are. Especially since it says TFT and LED for the main laptops. So I'm starting to think they are the same.

    Thanks.

TFT has nothing to do with the backlight it refers to the display itself:

    TFT=Thin-Film Transistor

The backlighting is either going to be CCFL or LED (some newer laptops have RGBLED or even OLED)

As far as I know, all X301 screens are TFT with LED backlit. There's no choice there. If you browse Lenovo Outlet some more you will see they sometimes call the same thing with slightly different names. I also think all X301's include webcams. Anyone know? ;/

I know that; I simply meant that typically if it states LED specifically on one then it's likely the other one is not LED

It has to be a misprint (the Lenovo outlet is notorious for them).

I have never heard of the x300/x301 EVER being offered with anything other than a 13.3" WXGA+ LED TFT display.

Give Lenovo sales a call if you're concerned. However, I definitely would recommend the second one (the first doesn't have an optical drive, and apparently even lacks Wi-Fi ["Wi-Fi wireless upgradable"]) as that seems to be a great price on a solid configuration.

exactly it's like all AMOLED screen's are TFT screen's but not all TFT screen's have LED lighting.

    your comparing apples to oranges

Now if you compared LED to LCD on the other hand. Then we have an argument on hand. :)

Ahh the power of the internet. :)

all X300 and X301 models have an LED backlight.   CCFL was never offered, even on the prototypes.   if the outlet says otherwise then it's a typo.

I do see between my T61 and T400 (well the office's now) that the LED on the T400 is a bit more washed out in colour; especially red for some reason. T61 deeper colours but dimmer at 15O nits

That has nothing to do with the backlight technologies inherently.
