right now lenovo has pretty decent deals on especially w. fatwallet 10%... but I just wanted to get some of your views as to whether it would be worth buying now or waiting.

Basically I need to sell my current laptop ( asus z96js) when I buy a new one. And I would rather sell it first and buy afterwards, but it would be nice to get this first so I could copy files over etc... + decrease lag time. The build time associated would probably give me enough time to sell it anyway. But as of now the price seems fairly decent (1200ish for a t61p with basic specs, id put in new cpu, hd, ram etc... and sell off the stuff it came with)

Prices are probably going to drop with time though, specially with penryn / 8800s in the pipeline... and I was considering just waiting until april to buy. But would rather get something sooner if prices will probably stay the same. Not having monitored lenovo's pricing over a while, I wanted to get your opinion. Are prices likely to rise after the holidays / boxing day or will more sales probably follow?

    Thx 4 ur opinions :)

I think it is best to consider whether you need a new computer now. It seems that a low price/performance point is very important to you. I don't think the 8800 gpu is going to affect pricing much because it is aimed at the high end market, while most notebooks use mainstream graphics like the 8600 gt or 8400 gs. However, the pricing of technology always drop with time. New technology is always expensive when it first comes out. If you wait until April it is likely that the new models with penryn will be more expensive than the current T61p price, while the last generation stuff (i.e. the current T61p) will become even cheaper. So, it really depends on whether you need the computer now, since you could always be waiting for the next generation technology and never actually buy a new computer. IMO the T61p has gotten a lot cheaper than when I bought mine.

yeah i definitely agree, I guess its just hard making the toss up. I dont mind paying the premium for newer technology if its that much of leap up from what i have now. The 8600GT is definitely better than the x1600, but the 8800GT or GS will be leaps and bounds ahead.

I could wait and so probably will but, if I can for example buy the t61p now and then sell it for more later when I do buy the new releases with penryn / 8800s then itd be even better....

I guess its just a question of whether price will keep dropping on the t61p or if itll go back up to closer to the list price of 1600~ (doubtful) but Im not sure how much lenovo usually discounts its stuff.

Thx 4 ur input and wilsonyxw v. well put, its always a decision of when you need a laptop, its I guess hard for me to decide if I really need it or I can bear with this thing for now.

I doubt you will be able to buy a T61p now and then sell it for more later, unless you find a buyer who is not aware of the numerous and constant discount campaigns offered.

As for the other question, Lenovo has been very aggressive in their pricing strategy and as mentioned, they constantly offer substantial discounts e.g. via their web site and in addition there are loads of coupons/codes around, which add to the total discount. Often making you able to get a ThinkPad for about 20-35% under MSRP.

I suggest you go to the Deals board on NBR and search around on the Lenovo board as well. There are many posts about ThinkPad discounts. Good hunting.

If you need a new computer get it now. If you can wait then wait
