I'm just hearing about and starting to learn a little about the SSD drives. Since I'm pulling the trigger to buy my Thinkpad on the 22nd.....It's close to crunch time and trying to read and get as much info as I can.
    So...do Lenovo's SSD's support TRIM? Or...is TRIM a feature of the OS?
I plan on purchasing the high performance 128G SSD.

Afaik, SSDs form Toshiba and Samsung, wich are beeing used for the 128/256GB variants, do not support TRIMM at the moment. Intel has announced TRIM-support for its G2-models ("Postville"), but the 1.8" SSDs are not available yet.

Yeah, don't buy the OEM SSD. Get an X25-M or OCZ Vertex/Agility.

    No they do not.

Still waiting for intel's firmware update for the X-25m G2 SSDs (and well x18 whenever those come out) to support TRIM.

Not at the present time. Intel could theoretically release a new firmware, but I have not heard any reports that they intend to.

Intel has committed to TRIM firmware upgrade.

The X-25 (gen 2) are great drives.

A lot of people fret over TRIM, SSD perfomance degradatoin, etc., but the fact is your SSD will last plenty long, and performance will still be greater than traditional disk.

Once you get used to 15 second boots, 7 second shutdowns, and 3 second sleep/resume, it's hard to go back.

    You should check out www.anandtech.com
Anand seems to have some of the best articles on SSDs.
His original SSD article is 31 pages. I fell asleep after page 2.

He recently wrote a followup article, 27 pages of which I read maybe 3. He mentions the OEM Samsung that Lenovo uses, Link.

I talked to some of the vendors who ship Samsung RBB based SSDs and got some sales data. They simply can’t give these drives away. The Indilinx based drives outsell those based on the Samsung RBB controller by over 40:1. If end users are smart enough to choose Indilinx and Intel, why aren't companies like Apple and Lenovo?

Don't ever opt for the SSD upgrade from any of these OEMs if you've got the option of buying your own Indilinx or Intel drive and swapping it in there.

Anand also blasts intel for the lack of availability of its second generation SSDs, link. Good for him, hopefully this changes soon.

I should also take this time to chastise Intel for absolutely botching the launch of the drive. I'm not talking about the embarrassing stop-shipment caused by poor validation, I'm talking about the fact that X25-M G2s are still out of stock even as I publish this article. The SSD group at Intel clearly needs to take lessons from the CPU teams: you don't launch product without availability.

Provantage.com has had some good intel SSD prices, link. They're out of stock on the second gen ssds, might want to keep an eye on them though

I think supply of the x25m g2 is starting to build up to proper inventory levels. If you look at pricing, they are much more in line with the Intel numbers + the usual small margin.

Newegg has them OEM I think. They did have a sale with the retail version a few days ago that looked like a decent "deal" compared to how pricing as been. Looks like the 80gig is about $280 again.
