Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the thinklights are LED (atleast in the current models), so they should theoretically last a long time. If yours went out, I would say it was just a fluke (read: bad luck :p).

It's known to happen, especially after updating to newer bios versions. However, I'm pretty sure mine died before a did any flashes. The webcam also stopped working and given that they're on the same little board I'd say they either fried or a conector went bad.

My fingerprint reader dies yesterday, after a call with the support for 43 minutes, they decided to replace it. It will arrive at my home on monday. Love Lenovo!

Some people in this thread sure look like they are on Lenovo cheerleading squad. Titan, Auryn and Thenamek thanks for posting your bad experiences! It's always good to know what it may get to before I make this purchase.

I've started looking at Lenovo assuming that I can count on repair if they ship me a lemon. Looks like I'll need to look at other brands too before I make up my mind.

i think some people have more experiences with Lenovo customer services and how they operate, so these people are less likely to be drawn into posting emotional messages or rant about things.

But to say they are on Lenovo cheering squad seems to be somewhat strange, especially if you haven't looked at their post history or know them personally.

Oh please. Just because some people have had nothing but good experiences they are on the 'cheerleading squad'? Try to be a little more mature and objective please. Some of us have had nothing but great service.

I am. I got my first ThinkPad in the mid-90's, and while I've had some problems along the way (MWave modem on the 755Ce, horrible keyboards on the entire 760 xx series, cracked keyboard bezel on the T23, cracked motherboard on the T40) by and large they've served me well, and when I needed support or repair, I've gotten it. Why wouldn't I be a cheerleader?

It's pure human nature that people complain more than they give thanks, hence why people are far more enthusiastic towards posting negative experiences on forums than posting positive experiences. This is why another big tech forum called Whirlpool is called "Whingepool"; most people posting are complaining.

Personally, I have had one issue, and that's a damaged card reader in my X200T. After a quick 10 minute call, they dispatched a guy from DHL to pick my laptop up for replacement. It took about 5 days but it was sent back in perfect order. And of course, I love how Lenovo allows you to take out your hard drive before sending off.

N.B. My experiences are applicable to Australia. Results may differ in other countries. Just a little off topic but the guy I was talking to was quite friendly, and we had a laugh about little differences between Queenslanders and Sydney-siders (him being from Brisbane and me being from Sydney). These little things make the experience all the more enjoyable.

yes the IBM service people are quite funny, especially those people whom just started working, they tend to be more talkative.

I daresay lenovo rocks. I got my x201t yesterday way ahead of my expectations and it works perfectly. My only gripe is 3 dead pixels that I cannot ignore but I will get that fixed when I call them Monday. Overall I am impressed.

I think the agreement is that 3 dead pixels are acceptable.

It's actually 2 dead pixels, a stuck grey pixel and some debris under the touch portion of the screen about the size of a pixel. Hopefully that is enough to get it replaced. If not then I'll have to revise my happiness with this purchase. :)

P.S. this keyboard is godly... like wow I can never go back to that chiclet crap!

Edit - if they do accept it for replacement would it be advisable to include something in the box detailing where the problem spots are for the repair guy? Or is that unnecessary?

there shouldn't be any debris, but they should consider that a stuck pixel, as it is no different to the end user.

Well they accepted it for replacement without any fuss. A box is being sent for me to pack the laptop away in. I do gotta say though the guy on the other end was great even though it was difficult to understand what he was saying at times. I like this no nonsense support... :)

there is a lot of the thought, design & engineering behind the thinkpad keyboard which is why it is so good.

and the 'chicket' keyboard behind the x100 is purportedly very good, some have posted that it's better than their standard keyboard. there are lenovo blogs about their design decisions and they are well worth reading imo.

My experience with Lenovo Service/ Warranty has been more involved. On my originally reporting the problems with the machine (limited to moving palmrests; creaks), first there was outright denial; followed by surprise and grudging acceptance; then there were the interminable attempted workarounds...At this point, I "escalated" (their term!) the matter and got senior management involved (including the boss in India and a high-level Beijing-based exec for client and customer service). This level of involvement proved to be a trigger. An exact replacement machine was delivered; this was followed by a problem with the OS (long story!) and Microsoft got involved. Eventually, the matter was settled to my satisfaction.

I also asked for a replacement keyboard for the new machine - the tech who came to install it at my place knew all about the problems with the perforated keyboards and was instrumental in framing my keyboard-related request, which was promptly delivered and installed. I am happy camper.

Was the process painful? Absolutely (my posts on this matter attest to this, I think). Was the reaction from Lenovo expected? If I leave out my "ideal conditions" mental image, I have to say yes (especially in India). Was my interaction with Lenovo/IBM staff at all levels courteous? Yes (though towards the end, I was prone to losing my temper at some of the repetitive and inane questions that were constantly being asked). Ultimately, was the end result positive? Yes! The machine is excellent. I have learnt how to handle the Lenovo "system". I have also made some friends among the staff!

Edit: I fully agree about the keyboard. If you can get the non-perforated one for your machine, it is a totally different experience altogether. I love it!
