Hello everyone, it seems like my college laptop will be a Thinkpad T400, with student pricing I got a T400 quoted for $650.84 + tax.
Now, how does Lenovo verify that you are in fact a student at a University? Is via the .edu email that you receive?
Also, is it customary for Lenovo to charge tax?

Its been a while since I've used it, but I wouldn't be surprised if theres no verification.
Also, you may want to check the pricing on the regular site with coupon codes, sometimes that is cheaper than student pricing. -
Not sure about verification, but Education portals tend to be exempt from both tax and shipping charges.

Hmm, that's odd then, it still wants to charge me tax...

Does the student discount work for K-12 Students or is it just k-12 teachers?

It works for students too. -
There was a discount these past couple of days, and i used that to see what my total on a T500 would be. Then did the same with the student discount. Comparing the two prices the student discount was cheaper, is that supposed to be? I thought the student discount was only arouind 5%

I suppose so, the student discount turned out cheaper than the 15% of coupon they were advertising. Now if only you could use the coupon with student pricing...

There is still tax.

Yep, but it's still a bit cheaper with the student discount. -
I ordered via the educational portal and there was no verification. They did tax me though, but I think that varies with states. I think if you click on right place, you get an extra 5% (student discount) + whatever sale they are having by using the student discount. It's usually the green coupon image that you click on The configs are also slightly cheaper.

get it through your college or uni.

How so?

I bought mine without any need of verification from my school. As for ordering through your school I would rather go through lenovo as you can better customize the laptop. And yes you will definitely have to pay tax and shipping.

The student discount site has an awesome deal going on right now. When you get to the home page you will see a link that says something like " employee prices through june something". Click on that. The deal i got on my t500 was to good to pass up. I got 2 gig ( 1 DIM ), Switchable graphics, 9 Cell Battery, WSXGA+ TFT screen. $870 after tax

usually the computer store in your local college or uni will have a spec sheet with academic pricing on it that they have a deal with lenovo with. ask for it and get a quote. sometimes you can do better with direct order from lenovo. depends if you can get the discounts or not. otherwise on a normal day your academic price is likely cheaper

Doesn't your college offer laptops directly?
I priced a W500 via the contractors/family discount versus the schools (UNC), and the latter still won out by a $100 or so.
And I was charged tax when I bought mine online back in 07. -

No, they just refer you to the HP and Apple website student discount sections.
Thanks for the info.
