The Notebook Review forums were hosted by TechTarget, who shut down them down on January 31, 2022. This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. Hi,
once again, I want to question the structure of the Lenovo subforum.

Back in 2012, I asked if the L-series might be better in the main ThinkPad subforum. Back then, this was rejected, with the argument that they are not as popular as T/X, and threads would quickly fall behind in the forum before anyone would see them. I still do understand this and think its a valid argument, although one could argue that the L-series is a bit more popular now than 3 years ago, but oh well, not really much^^

Where the problem lies for me is in the X1 Carbon and Yoga series. Back then, another argument was that the main forum was only to include T/W/X/R etc. as "ThinkPad Classic" models. The problem with this argument: Its a bit subjective where to draw the line, unless you strictly only allow T/W/X/R in the main forum.

As of now, the situation is a little bit bizarre. ThinkPad Yoga threads are in the main T/X/W/R forum, although ThinkPad Yoga is orignally a spawn of the ThinkPad S series, which was originally a part of ThinkPad Edge (although the new Yoga models are closer to T/X now). On the other hand, the X1 Carbon, which is by name, and design, a part of the X series, is in the Edge subforum. Both lines, X1 Carbon and Yoga, are more than popular enough, so the first argument doesn´t really apply on them.

So my proposition would be to move the X1 Carbon to the main forum, as it is part of the X series. You could argue about the ThinkPad Yoga models. maybe they should be in the ThinkPad Edge subforum, or maybe not. Given its popularity, it could also stay in the main Lenovo subforum.

The last point I wanted to make, is the name of the Edge subforum - the name "ThinkPad Edge" does not exist anymore, X100e and X121e are already old now, as is the SL series. So maybe the name should be updated, as it could be confusing to users who are looking to post about models like the 11e series, or ThinkPad E and S series. Not everyone has studied ThinkPad history.

Thanks for reading this. I just wanted to bring this up, as the current arrangement seems a bit unlogical and misaligned with the current ThinkPad lineup (which was changed significantly in the past years).

TL;DR: Please move the X1 Carbon into the main Lenovo forum, and please update the name of the ThinkPad Edge subforum.

I second this. I think the Lenovo section needs an overhaul badly. I would guess its one of the more popular forums here (alienware is the most active). People have issues posting in Lenovo because of how difficult it is to figure out where to post and even then people can't find the proper forum to read from. I hope the mods look at this and realize that the site would benefit greatly from a minor tweak in the lenovo forum.

True, but you've got to draw the line somewhere.

At the time this decision was made, around the time of the R400, T400 and X200 ThinkPads, the forums were a lot more busy. It was sort of zenith of notebook interest, before the onslaught of tablets and smartphones, as they are presently constituted. Posts in the main forum were falling off the main page in a matter of hours. It was also before Lenovo vastly increased the diversity of its notebook offerings. The X1 Carbon and Yoga weren't even being sold yet.

At the time as I recall there was the idea of putting the R, T and X series in their own forum. I was against this, arguing the forums would eventually return to a more normal pace, which I think has more than rung true, and came up with the idea to have the classic ThinkPads in the main forum, then having more consumerish notebooks in one sub forum and other ThinkPads in another. It won the day. I don't remember how the Yogas ended up in the main forum while the X1s were in the other, but in the end, there's no perfect solution. I don't see how moving the X1 Carbon into the main forum is going to make much of a difference one way or the other, but that's only my opinion.

You could do like the Lenovo.com latop area and divide into Professional, Student, and Entertainment. There are too many models now so dividing into X, T, W or whatever gets clumsy.

Or you could just have two forums under Lenovo. Business (Classic) and Stupid (Wannabees).

    :)

As the times have changed, it might be time even to give up the artificial division in two ThinkPad forums, and just divide the Lenovo forum in one big ThinkPad section and one forum for everything else (IdeaPad/Essential/Yoga/Lenovo). So basically what Thors.Hammer also suggested. This would mean less confusion (no more people who post in the wrong ThinkPad forum) and also one big subsection with more activity (instead of two smaller ones with less activity).

I think we should leave it alone for now.
