I'm not sure what kind of specials Lenovo usually has, but right there is a base $350 discount using a link I found on a coupon site and an additional 15% off.

    P8600
    Vista Ultimate
ATI Mobility Radeon 3470 with 256MB
    WXGA w/LED + Camera
    2 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory (1 DIMM)
160 GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm (will be upgrading separately)
    DVD 8x Dual Layer
    Express Card & 7 in 1 Reader
    Integrated Bluetooth
    WiFi 5300
    6-cell baterry

The default price is $1549 and with all of the discounts applied it is $1018. Will there be better discounts if I wait?

That's a pretty good deal. Better than that I think only if you buy refurbished from the Lenovo Outlet.

I would say go for 1 gig of ram, and then upgrade yourself which will save you some money.

Also, have you thought of getting the Intel 5100 wlan card?

Finally, I think you should go for the higher res screen so you don't regret it later on as replacing lcd screens are time consuming and expensive

I read through some old threads and it seems the LED is brighter, consumes slightly less power and will last longer. I was worried about the CCRT fading out. Plus at least right now I don't have to have the extra resolution.

Yes, LED screens last longer than CCRT screens (on average).

If a 14-inch screen with 1440x900 resolution and LED lighting is important, the Dell Latitude E6400 is a good alternative to the T400.

Also, there is no way to downgrade to the ram unfortunately

Yeah, that's the other model I am considering, and I actually owned one for two weeks before something went wrong and I returned it. I really liked it, but it doesn't have switchable graphics.

I changed the OS to Vista Business and downgraded the wifi to the 5100, so the total sits at $941 with a savings of 517.20

You might want to select Vista Business 64-Bit if you intend to upgrade to 4GB+ of RAM in the future.

Other than that your configuration looks good and the price seems fair.

OOC, is the Lenovo outlet considered as good as the dell outlet? Are the products from there as good as getting a new one? Same warranty?

Dell outlet for Latitudes/Precisions is typically better since most models have standard 3 year warranty - if warranty is what you are looking for that is.

Almost the same config. except Vista Basic (would move to Windows 7 RC) for 75X + 50 (Tax) = 81X.
