Does anyone know if a T400 configured hard drive will boot in a X200 laptop. I’m working on a disaster recovery scenario and tried to standardize on one model, T400, however the CEO needs lighter laptop. Of course, they don't want to buy two spare laptops to have available for a swap in case of a non disk hardware failure.
So I am trying to determine if a hard drive loaded with all the T400 drivers would work in a X2000 without the BSOD error. I believe that is usually caused by the disk driver issue but can't seem to find if the two model are using the same disk drivers. ( please feel free to correct me here)
I can handle loading the Nic, Sound and Video drivers etc if I can get it up quickly.
The idea is, one laptop has a non disk hardware issue, we pull a model out a drawer slap the hd into it and it boots so we can get their files and quickly recover. Also, we can make one generic image for Acronis applications.
Any help here would be greatly appreciate and feel free to correct my technical mistake since I am not a hardware expert by any means.
Oh and yes we have external drive backup as well as Internet ones but the recovery time on those is too long.

You certainly could configure a X200 and a T400 very similarly. I would think it would work, but don't have a T400 or X200 laying around to test it.

I would think it would boot up fine. However, you would likely have to reactivate Windows due to the substantial hardware (namely Mobo) change.

normally, it should boot up fine. just reinstall the drivers and reactivate windows, though i'm not sure if this is allowed because the key is attached to the mobo...

I have tried this numerous times, on X60, T60... and between X61 and T61, R61 (this is also a reason why i keep couple of backup thinkpad laptop in the boot of my car).... I believe you can do it for the X200 and the T400, it would just ask you to reload the drivers for the hardware that is different. I think the X200 and the T400 have the same motherboard, so it should work okay.

Thinkpads are very compatible in that regard. I've used Windows 7 and have swapped between X60T, T43p, T60p, W500, W700 and even a Dell Studio XPS for that matter and have never had a problem being able to install correct drivers after boot. The only issue I've ever had is making sure bios is set to AHCI or Compatible mode for the disk drive on boot. Usually I boot and if I get the BSOD I switch to compatible and it's fine.

I've also used Acronis with Universal Restore that allows you to restore across diverse hardware. I've done that with Windows Server 2003 and haven't had an issue.

the older OS tend to be more fussy with hardware changes.

I think it would be fine and I know how it is to have massive crash on your stuff. Time to backup...
